dont fancy cutting the bulhead so am gonna go down the mirage route i think with the t2. what else will i NEED on my shopping list and why for a 998 conversion. i dont really know that much about engines but especially turbo'd engines.

thanks

cheers dave!

right i was a bit too vague in that first post so i'll explain more the info that i may need. I want to run about 10psi so i will be modding a standard 998 head that i have already had ported and polished to give me a cr of about 8.5, i have a small universal intercooler on the way for free and an mg metro cam which i got for pretty cheap.

so from reading the site i believe i need the fuel pump and regulator side of things.

do i need an adjustable actuator to achieve 10psi? as i have read that the standard metro turbo without ecu only goes to 4.

shopping list:
fuel pump and regulator
fuel return pipe
t3 to t2 plate
oil return pipe
intercooler piping
adjustable actuator?

finally for the layman, can someone explain a bleed valve?

no advice fellas?

the 20 hour turbo guy says on his site you can use an adjustable actuator or bleed valve, how does the bleed valve do this?

i'l post a pic of my sister if i get answers.

Basically the outlet pressure of the turbo (ie, "boost pressure") goes down a small tube/hose to the actuator and when the pressure reaches a certain value - determined by the spring in the actuator - the actuator starts to open the wastegate.

A bleed valve is essentially a Tee of this tube/hose that allows an adjustable amount of the air to escape. Because the tube/hose is small, the escaping air causes the pressure received at the actuator to be lower than the actual pressure being sent, so the actual pressure has to go higher before the residual pressure at the actuator is high enough to operate it...

Hope that makes sense.

right so these devices are restrictors and without them the enhgine would just boost till it blows?therefor for me to run a boost of 10psi i would need an actuator with with a tolllerance of at most 10? and a bleed valve could fool the actuator into running more than 10?

just reading over what i've written realised i can just get a bleed valve to fool my actuator into running whatever boost i set it at if my thinking is correct?

No, the wastgate is what limits boost - the actuator opens the wastegate (which is on the turbine side) and the turbo slows down. EDIT - wastegate on older turbos, other things like variable guide vanes on more modern ones but the principle is the same, control the turbine speed...

Without a bleed valve you need an actuator of the pressure rating that you want - so a 10psi actuator to achieve 10psi boost.

Yes.

Only to a certain extent - it's a very crude way of doing things - once you start bleeding more air away than the amount going to the actuator, it will become erratic, slow to operate and generally unreliable - probably giving spikes that are bad....

this has been the hardest thing for me to grasp inderstanding in years, i'm usually good at this sort of thing, but i'm getting there, thanks for the help

my next question is to do with the megajolt ignition system but i'll save that for another time.
