3 core with a few mods to the cooling system and so far seems fine. no mechanical fan and just an electric fan as well.

I am planning to use a 4 core item, mostly just for the extra water capacity you get.

Iain what have you modded on the cooling system mate?

I use a 4 core, always had problems with it, so now I have gone for a 2 core, but not fitted it yet.

My sister is so fit I won't show anyone her picture

Lake District

2 core rad, standard plastic fan, block modified around water pump area, block to head bypass hose, 88 deg stat.
Runs stupidly cool, in fact i'm just about to block half the rad off to help it run hotter, if you drive with the heater on the engine wont go above 60deg !

In my experiance the 4 core rads are toilet. They may hold more water, but they do not do a good job of cooling. We ran a minispares 2 core until it got broken, now we run a standard 3 core from the later A+ minis and it is fine. In fact I would say it is better tha the 2 core, although it has been cooler this summer than last.

I want to get a 3 core rad but didnt know where best to get one from. Im guessing there are lots of pattern parts but which are the best?

Also whats the cost of a 3 core rad? thought they were about £30ish..?

the one im using is a bit old and i dont feel its worth paying £70 for a 2 core one.

As far as I know, a 3 core rad was standard on all minis. There are two different types, the difference being in the number of fins per inch measured down the radiator from top to bottom. The Cooper S spec rad has more fins per inch, (I believe 16 per inch) and hence is able to dissipate more heat. This spec rad was also fitted to most later minis, and definately 1275 minis. The other rad as fitted to early cars had less fins per inch. The difference is clearly visible by eye if you put the two types side by side.

The 3 core I have is off a late mini. I think any mini with the A+ has a decent 3 core rad so from about 1983 on. That is where I have found all the 3 cores I have used.

Yeah just wondered what pattern ones were available and if they were any good, minispares has one available for £37. Might give that a go..
