Just watched that Open Uni program about Darwin etc and got the old brain box churning

I was thinking about how many humans on the face of the planet that are religious, even though science has disproven nearly all of them?

I do think there are questions out there that are unanswered (i.e. when did existance begin and how?) but i dont think we will ever be able to understand that sort of thing, so not going to waste my time losing sleep over it.

Im a simple enough person, but just wondering what peoples motives are for believing in these religons (family pressure, upbringing, sense of duty, desperation?) especially in this day and age (im not saying this is a bad thing either, just curious...)

So, reasons for religion....discuss..

Id say its definately to do with upbringing, if youre born into a religious family I think its hard to get away from, and inevitable that you would believe in that "faith".

I didnt realise scientology was so nuts, I guess my beliefs are firmly set on "the way things are" or "common sense".

Way I see it we are just more evolved bacteria, bacteria dont believe in religion and gods, they just get on with it lol. We're just part of nature and when we die thats it, sweet fook all else.

Me too Rich

I havent got a problem with most religions, as they promote good nature, peace, and give a sense of right and wrong, which can only be a good thing, especially for those who cant work these things out for themselves.

I just find it interesting how much effort human kind has 'unnecesarily' (for want of a better word) put into 'religions' over the centuries, that have now been proved defunct.

I wonder how a parallel universe would look if they had never found religion?

I was forced to a Methodist church every Sunday for 16 years. Hated it. Didn't make any sense to me. These days I happily call my self angnostic.

I do occasionaly have the 'blind faith' debate with my mum. The problem with that discussion is that both our arguments are good, just not in the opinion of the other person. I'm not knocking her or her beliefs, it's her choice after all. She's not quite senile yet... *happy*

I guess it's just a case of waht you want/need to believe. Maybe a safety blanket kind of thing...

Some things, I can understand why people want to believe something else exists. For example when a loved one dies, you'd want to think 'they're in a better place' or 'you'll be reunited sometime'. It's hard to think that's it, but I do think that's it.

I once had a discussion with a Jehova (however you spell it) witness. I said I would believe in God if he presented himself to me. I asked him to go away and find out why God never had.
He came back 2 weeks later and said he had done a lot of research and found that God thought I wasnt important enough.
Fuck God then...........

I seriously doubt it!

This is too true, the one thing you cannot prove but people are willing to kill each other over it.

It's a touchy area.

Peresonally i believe religion is tosh, (not wishing to offend anyone). There is no hard evidence to prove God is real.

However theres no evidence to say he isnt real.

So i screwed my own argument.

LMAO at Paul.

I went to church for a while when I was younger. Not because I'm religious, but because a good friend of mine was.

I've since come to the conclusion that religious people are less in touch with reality then crack heads.

Sorry if this causes anyone offence. All IMHO of course.

Make up your own mind. That is the beauty of not following a religion eh.

i had a very simula, if slightly intoxicated (on my part) discussion with a group of fryers on a ferry coming back from France. He said that god presents himself to everyone in different ways and its up to that person to choose weither to see him or not.

He also told me that he didnt own anything but the robes he was wearing and a 'freind' had loaned them the car and they were driving and someone else had paid for the crossing, bloody free loaders, lol

To be fair, we shook hands at the end of our conversation and he asked if he could give me a small token, it was a credit card sized bit of laminated card with some latin writting on and a little pedant inside. I still carry it in my wallet as a reminder of that night.

Yeah! Dont try so hard, no one makes it out alive anyway!!

I respect people can do what they want, everythings fine and dandy.

Its like I dont mind gays, but some are just in your face about it and want the whole world to know what theyre like/believe, I think some religions are like that, doesnt make a difference to me, but when people try to suffocate you with it it gets abit wearing.

Christmas day a few years ago a jehovis whitness came knocking on the door (not that I celebrate christmas in a religious way!), but I just found that offensive, its just like for fuck sake, if I wanted to join your faith dont you thing I would? I dont need "saving" from anything thanks so can you just keep it to yourself!

Religion isn't my thing either. I'm logical to the extent that everyone thinks I'm an annoying cunt so obviously I don't believe in religion. I generally just ignore it. I never try and impose my lack of beliefs on other people or influence others about religion.

Although I was tempted once. Some gimp in town was handing out religious leaflets and I told him I didn't want one. Then the cheeky fucking bollox had the attitute to make a snide comment saying "Oh, so your not much of a thinker then?". I nearly lost the plot. Actually I'm going to stop thinking about it because I'm getting angry again

Religion was invented donkies ago, by the elite/upper echelons of society to keep the masses under control.

Personally I don't believe any of it, but I guess we all have our own opinions :)

If you want to stop Jehova's Witness away from your house, put a 'I give blood' sticker near your front door. They won't like that...

Again, I don't have a problem with Jehovas, as long as they don't come and try and waste my time. I'm not interested, get the message...
