Thinking about buying a Mondeo 03ish TDCI Zetec 130ps with about 60000 miles on the clock. Anyone else on here got one of these, just wondering if there is anything i should look out for??

Yes, I have one (Ghia not Zetec, but same TDCi 130 engine) and it's the biggest piece of shite Ford ever produced....

Mine sits at the side of the drive ever since the turbo failed last year at 57k miles and I can't be arsed to fix it at the moment because the turbo isn't actually a turbo - to save costs Ford cast it into the whole exhaust manifold so you need a crane to get it out...

Before the turbo failed, the DMF (look it up) was also shaking itself to bits.

This all happened 6 months after the warranty expired.

If I paid a franchised Ford dealer to replace the turbo and DMF, we are talking over £2k.

Do not touch an 04 or earlier.

This was electronic diesel injection in it's infancy and things have got a lot better since (and the flywheels have been changed too) but do NOT go for one before the collabiration with Peugeot (circa late 04).

clutch changes are a pain in the arse, dual mass flywheel failures and i have seen about 4 now which regularly "forget" the injector coding resulting in the glow plug lamp flashing and god awfull performance. recoding the injectors sorts it but requires specialist kit, and have heard of places charging near £500 to do this, even though its a 20 minute job.

turbo's failing is jsut a way of life in modern turbodiesels unfortunately. I think there just worked way to hard to provide the level of performance people expect from them!

Minimadmotorman's dad ran a fleet of octavia taxis. He gave a 52 plate mondeo tdci a go. It ate clutches and tyres and spent a lot of time in the dealers for warrenty claims. Had loads of ellectrical faults. quite often you would have to turn it off and on while you where driving it to get things working again.

If your going to spend that sort of money, get a passat tdi 130.

It also had 6 flywheels in a year!

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

All the Mk3 (?) Mondeos had dual mass flywheels, I believe you can now get a revised version that doesn't crap out. They are also not horrendously expensive, but getting the gearbox out is a big job- it really is a big heavy lump. Also if the flywheel fails expect it to take the starter motor out in the process.
My mate Phil has one, his is a Y plate I think, 115bhp TDI, not common rail, it goes plenty well enough and has a normal injector pump so not the common rail elec injection woes to worry about.

The DMF Ford used is the basic problem - the fact my turbo failed as well is probably just "bad luck".

It really is a crap, cheap and nasty design - I haven't taken mine out yet but Ford's TIS manual seems to suggest the two halves are bonded together with rubber.... proper DMFs have circumferential springs between the two halves.

The fact they appear to use rubber also explains the clutch related problems (ie, heat from...)

The starter goes (or at least becomes unreliable) first because of all the brokern bits of rubber getting into the starter pinion...

It really is just a shite design....

The common rail electronic injection problems just make it worse.

But when Ford completely re-designed the engine in collaboration with (I think) Peugeot, it seems to have got as lot better.

Just remember the Ford (and many others) design criteria - make it last the warranty and Ford don't have to pay - design it to fail just after the warranty and the customer pays......

As I said earlier, the engine was completely re-designed in about 04/05 when Ford did a deal with (I think) Peugeot.

By most accounts, they are fine since - Just don't touch the early ones...
