Hi all,

Today I removed the head from my '60 Austin Healey Sprite racer. First time I saw the oily bits (I bought the car as is in the US). I was quite impressed with the pistons. They don't look off the shelf to me, or are they? The car used to compete in the SCCA championship. For good measure I threw a pic in of the whole car, hope you like it as much as I do*wink*

cheers,

Arnoud

Raised crown pistons.

BMC did that in the 60s on the 998 Cooper I believe, but I've never seen or heard of that on a 1275.

Interesting.

If it's an American built car then they must be custom pistons. They are so easy and cheap to get made over there.

They do not look raised to me *oh well*

Could be common flat top pistons with a littlke CNC work on them

Diffuclt to say for certain without any being at TDC but, from the lack of carbon on the outer top faces of the pistons (esp. noticable in the second photo, RHS) I would say yes....

I read an american article on the internet a while ago about pistons being made especially to go up inside the combustion chamber on the 2 valve, offset plug, kidney shaped chambers (not A series but others of similar chamber design) and it was, as Vegard says, to improve squish.

Would like to see one at TDC to be sure though....

They don't look raised to me either,
look at front cylinder , carbon/shadow.
Would be interested to see head chamber,
I would imagine it is very small

Hmmm.... I still think they are raised (from the carbon profile) - but I'm sure Arnoud will tell us soon enough :)

F*ck loads of Squish , and probably , detonation and broken pistons
Unless the plug positions are moved , head chamber altered , I recon a raised crown like that would tend to cause dead zones in the combustion
