I've had a new HD and everything installed on my laptop, but now can't get my data aq software (that works thru com1) to talk to my laptop. I know that when I first set this up through my COM1 serial few years back the supplier of the unit talked me thru pinging my com port to check it was working.

Anyways - I think I need to do this again as nothing else is working.

But no idea How I did it the first time?

The only way I know of is to do a loopback test

Yep that is all I would do. Short out pins 2 & 3, then in hyperterminal you should see the letters you type appear.

sure your baud rate is set up correctly, hyperterminal may not default to what you need.

if you have the fifo buffers engabled, try turning them right down or disabling them, it can play havoc with real time data streams and some legacy stuff sure youll find it in my computer - device manager - serial port

Well, it was working all along - I was just being a dumbass and still had it looking for a CAN signal rather than Autosense... I did the stuff in the link above, which was very useful! Thanks

thats cause you have an option to "echo characters locally" or something checked in hyperterminal :) un-check it.

That's likely because it's not a real physical com port but a loop back com port. This is used for testing and can't be used for comm. Your actual com port is on another number.

thats interesting Jean,

I wasnt aware of loopback ports, i did try it with various com ports, the ones it has worked on and others too,

also tryed the fifo bufferes on and off ect,

I finally decided it must be somthing screwy in the laptop, or install as the usb ports have always been a bit fritzy

anyway its now suffered terminal impact induced hard drive faliure....
