OK got another problem.

We went to fit the pistons yesterday and basically couldn't get the oil control rings to fit in the bore. The pistons are standard turbo pistons and the replacement ring pack is R33646.

The original oil control rings are made up of 3 parts whereas the replacement ones comprise a single ring with a steel spring behind.

From a bit of deduction, we worked out that the rings fit the bore but the position of the spring behind the ring when its fitted to the piston prevents the ring compressing fully into the groove (ie the groove isn't deep enough).

I've researched this and there seems to be some chat that there are differant pistons but I couldn't find out anything else on the subject.

When I bought the rings some 5 years ago, the guy did have my original rings and piston to ensure he ordered the correct stuff but I never checked it at the time. I've now had the block profesionally honed and prepeped and don't really want to have to buy new pistons as this will require a rebore and more flippin expense!

Any help would be appreciated!

cheers

Rob

You can get away with just fitting 2 new oil scrapers on the old spring as the scrapers are a pretty standard items in most cases.

I don't like those new (ish) one piece rings.

which height is your oil control groove in the piston?
I did have this problem with a set, they did have std n/a groove instead af the larger turbo one.

Fab, I'm not sure. Will go down the workshop today if I can and measure - what are the differingt measurements between the turbo and N/A pistons?

I expect I have a set of standard oil control springs somewhere, hopehully a new set of standard scraper rings would fit.

Worth a try...

you certainly have the
1,59 fire ring 1,59 compression ring and 4mm oil control
the r33646 ringset have a larger oil control ring which not fit in the 4mm groove,
you have to machine the groove to suit the 33646 control ring wich from memory is somewhere near 4.5mm.
and yes as john said; the oil control spring differ from 3.5 and 4mm but rings are the sames.

Total seal all the way! I run the Total seal turbo rings in the 16 valver, I originaly bought them for the turbo pistons, but used them on the Cooper S pistons instead. Not cheap though at £85 a set.

I do have a new set of standard rings that will fit those pistons that came off the Cooper S pistons, and I have a set of used rings for those as well.

I could be tempted to part with the new rings if the offer is somewhere right *wink*

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be...
So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...
