In brief I want to add a working brake light and rear indicators to my pit bike:

but....i have no idea how these stator things work (the bikes version of an alternator)

The bike has no electrics at present other then the ignition spark, so im pretty much starting from scratch.

Apparently I dont need to run a battery, I can wire in a voltage regulator, like so:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/KICK-START-VOLTAGE-R...A1%7C240%3A1318

and aslong as the engine is running, i should have enough 12V dc to run brake/indicator/headlights etc but im a bit doubtful that the stator can provide enough amps tbh? Can it??

Also, how do i wire in all these bits? I have never messed with bike electrics before, but feeling confident, so if you guys could give me some pointers Id very much appreciate it!

Cheers

Joe

can you not test the stator to see what amps its kicking out? in theory it can ve done but i doubt it has enough power.

once this has been tested we can start on the wring, the brake light might be tricky as you will need a switch somewhere and im not sure where they normally are on bikes.

got a switch on the lever for the brakes & indicators, ill measure the stator output when im next down, will it matter that its gonna be AC?

all im really bothered about is the brakes and indicators tbh, a headlight will be a luxury as i dont plan to go out in the dark that often!

Joey thats awesome!!

I've just bought one about a week and a bit ago but it doesnt run yet, been pretty gutted but it only cost me £100 as a "non runner" ive had the engine apart as I thought it was to do with the kick start mech. Alas everythings fine so I have to rebuild it all now doh!! Replaced the loom so I think its a dicky stator as im not getting a spark.

The stator has two coils on it, one does the signal to the CDI/coil etc and another one which is on mine but unused has wires for electric start and lights etc. You can see it on the side in this pic:

Does your stator have two coils like my one? James_H is a demon when it comes to these little bikes so im sure he'll be able to tell you when hes back from boarding. He sent me up a spare stator but its one with only a coil to power the ignition side of things.

Theres this website, full of 14 yearold cockends but theres some info on here

http://www.pitbikeclub.co.uk/index.php

Checkit:

http://www.pitbikeclub.co.uk/showthread.php?t=19804

Think theres some threads on how to make your bike "road legal" so I guess all the info you need might be there, have a good search!!

Is it fun anyway? Mines the 125 like yours but as I say ive not been on it yet :( Should be a lauf this summer!

sweet, you got the usd forks too, i did see that in the background of your thread and thought 'respect' haha

sadly ive not used it much, the engine runs sweet as a nut and its well rapid, but the box wont let you go from 1st to 2nd when moving, so you have to start in 2nd, and slip the clutch a fair bit.

I dont want it turning into another project, so rather than pissing about taking it to bits trying to figure out whats wrong, i saw this badboy on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Pit-Bike-Dirt-Bike-1...A1%7C240%3A1318

so just gonna sling that in for the summer , and then i can take my time rebuilding my motor.

as far as road legal, over here they dont really give a flying fuck tbh, mines been road reg'd from new, but the guy before me ripped off all the bolt on 'aa' battery powered rubbish (i kid you not!) that they used to get it through its dvla cert when new.

ive been offered £1200 for it by a neighbour, as the manx DOT stopped letting people road reg them a few years back, so im pretty lucky finding this one in such good nick!

yours looks to have the longer swingarm on, i think ill prob do that on mine too eventually as i struggle to keep the front down when giving it death. Gonna get a 12" rear wheel first and see if that helps, should make it look alot better anyhow.

will have a browse on that site now

cheers punk

Sweeet, yeah yours looks awesome! I'm glad I manged to get one with the bigger rear wheel, can imagine the 10 on the back making it quite tricky to ride.

I saw a guy riding one over here yesterday actually, looked to be quite nippy! The 140cc race engines they do would creat some fun too methinks.

hehe and like the bat symbol he appears!!

Right!!

If you have the spare coil on your stator then you should have a yellow and a white wire in your loom that are not used.

these are the output wires that give you your positive and negative to work from.

you could fit a battery but i wouldnt have said that its strickly necessary as the bike will be running when the lights are needed. if when you get it set-up they are stuggling then you can fit a battery i would say.

invest in a rectifier/regulator otherwise you will have to keep the revs up to get any sort of decent light.

http://www.ooracing.com/store/index.php?ac...d&productId=114 (that ones abit rich but you get the idea.)

or you could fit this and not have to worry about power output:

http://www.ooracing.com/store/index.php?ac...&productId=1186

then just wire it up as usual. it doesnt matter which of the yellow and white you choose for an earth i do believe. *happy* simples.

you should have a brake light switch on your front brake lever? if its standard.

and you say youve already got the indicator switch, so your laughing *happy*

This should help:

Righto

Had a good route and it looks like i dont have the spare wires coming off the stator, just these:

so might just fork out and get this thing you pointed out:

http://www.ooracing.com/store/index.php?ac...&productId=1186

will i still need a regulator with this,? im guessing not as it is already dc?

Also, do they fit all pitbikes? or should i check its compatible before ordering?

Sorry for being a right noob about these bikes!!

black box on the right is your Reg.

you'll be sorted *happy*

can you take a pic of the one that you replace please?

if its a certain one then i will buy it off you.

while were all posting pics in here:

im re-doing the end can since i changed the plastics to tuck it away abit again.

Then i'll get the whole pipe mandrel bent in stainless (ive made a custom exhaust as i didnt like the 180 bend straight after the port!)

stands alot taller than all the others ive seen! they are great fun over the dirt tracks and jumps.

ha, 7 mins, legend.

this thing?

i thought it was the CDI thing?

the feed from the stator goes directly to it, then a feed to the coil/kill switch like in your diagram?

nope. in the link to the D/C coil the black box on the right is the Reg.

it uses your original CDI (like you pictured) the reg just plugs into the (now) extra two wires.

better put the pic i ment to put up in that other post aswell ey!

yeah it runds a treat, but has a prob shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, so i have to just take on in 2nd (which tbh isnt a big deal)

ive bought a gasket set and im gonna open it up and have a look around try and figure out why and keep it as a spare motor/box

james, did you say you were after the stator or something? let me know what it is your after and ill get it in the post

i was just wondering if it was an Inner rotor type stator, i doubt it is TBH so i wouldnt go through any hassle!

i killed my bike at the weekend anyway....well i only snapped the clutch cable but i want to make it lighter...and it is in desperate need for some chunkier tyres.

I've also bent the handle bars so ive got abit of a shopping list....high comp piston might as well go in while im at it haha.

oh yeah! and my rear brake caliper snapped off! bad ass....so need one of those aswell...

god damn chinese QC....

BOOM....EDIT: Did you get a different stator in the end then? to run the light stuff?

i have no idea if you can buy the plugs...

they normally come with a little harness so its plug and play...

if you could find a wiring diagram your laughing...
