anyone took one appart? want to have a nose about and check all is in order. re-builds are expensive, so though DIY may be worth a go.

and before everyone jumps on the 'sure you fancy playing with something trhat does abou 60krpm' i know its gotta be perfect!!

Well my turbo seems to have been butchered so I have already began to take mine apart, I have nothing to loose by doing it.

I will post some pics at some point

Mark up the position of the nut to the shaft, and the compressor wheel to the shaft. An indelible pen is ok, but some kind of engraved marking is better. If it gets rubbed off, it's a full re-balance job!

I'm pretty sure it is a LH thread - use the best fiting socket you have. If you separate the centre core from the two housings, you can hold the turbine (exhaust wheel) in your hand and undo the nut - it shouldn't be that tight really.

The shaft draws outwards from the turbine end. Upone removing, you can see the 270 degree thrust washer. Use the correct drive for removing the fastenings - these can be very tight by the way, so your ?1.99 torx set from the market might damage the fastener, and you'll never remove it. If it feels too tight, get a decent torx / star (i forget what it is) from a decent manufacturer and use that.

Piston ring seal on turbine shaft needs great atttention when removing / fitting.

Good luck!

Got a spare T3 in my garage with a knackered oil seal.

There doesn't seem to be any play on the shaft.

So could I replace the seal myself if I was careful ?

Does anyone know how much they cost and who sells them?

I've seen small adverts in the back of CCC before

something along the lines of

'rebuild it yourself' 'save loads of cash' etc

If I can find one I'll post the number

Too many projects!

Motorsport Developments in Blackpool sell rebuild kits for about ?80

Its not easy.. many studs are likely to seized and will need replacing.

Other than that remember to grip one end of the shaft in a vice but make sure it's not supporting the weight of the assembly. Mark the nut and impeller, then undo the nut using a proper 12 pointed socket.

Dis-assembly from there is stright forward, but rember to mark the position of the compressor and turbin housing relative to the core, so that you can put it back together the same way round!!

i got a service kit from a place in oldham called euro turbos (advert says rochdale) it was ?75 for cash it came with bearings, nuts, bolts etc and he even chucked in extra gaskets and they had them in stock. might be useful if your in the manchester area.
it would be useful to have a good set of small circlip pliers to because they hold the bearings in.

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

So you have rebuilt one then? had any problems with it? what about balancing?

Ive been told that the impellors are individually ballanced, so there shouldnt be a problem. how true this is is anyones guess. but sounds logical.

the impellors are ballanced but as long as you mark them before you take them apart, and put them back in the same place you should be ok

yeah i did my turbo myself i totally forgot about marking the impellers when i stripped it down and it is ok, but this could be down to pure look *tongue* there is places in the auto trader that charge about 100 to 150 quid for seals and bearings i think, so its upto you if you want to chance it

Dont suppose you have a number for the place in rochdale? havent had a reply from motorsport developments.... suppose i should ring them

Re marking impellors, have done this, i had to use a gatorgrip socket on exhaust turbine to het nut off inlet end, just got to seperate the middle from the inlet back plate now (still!)
