Yesterday I fitted the same thing exactly, but not to a mini. You have already screwed the probe to the sensor so you have seen that it is a solid piece of brass,so I dont see why you cant cut it down(But dont cry to me if it costs you another £25) |

The probe is just pushed through the fins on the rad, between the gills, and is screwed on to the body by the person installing it.It has just a small thread formed on one end and there is no evidence that it contains any sensing device -how could it transfer its response ?. I,m pretty sure its just a brass rod to transfer the heat to the body where the sensor is. |

From what you say it will be a brass rod that could in theory be cut and not directly damage a sensor; it seems, as you say, that the brass part is just for transferring heat to the sensor.

cutting it will probably throw the calibration out, and sometimes these probes are hollow with nitrogen in them. 1972 998 TURBO SLEEPER |

Just a thought but wouldn't the manufacturer have saved the material costs and made it shorter if it didn't need to be that long in the first place? I think the calibration argument is looking good. It's not the age that makes me creak it's the mileage |

Can you not fit it from the front so it sticks into the engine bay instead of out through the grille?
I seriously doubt it! |

Ten minutes at tickover should do it - see if the fan cuts in. |
