exhaust manifold etc sizing

Just wondering as i have been doing a bit of experimenting on a basic level with different middle pipes and back boxes, but it seems as my engine prefers a 1 3/8 maniflow system straight through with a mild steel side exit back box than the play mini carbon rear box and stainless middle pipe. Is it my imagination or does a larger middle pipe and rear box mated to the 1 3/8 manifold not run so well? The reason i ask is it looks better than the maniflow item. Would it be a back pressure issue? I.E smallish manifold to large middle and back box. 1293 suck through sc.
