Yamaha have revived the use of the cross plane crank in this year's R1 it basicaly gives an inline 4 the power delivery characteristic of a V twin. Could t his principle be of benifit in a car engine? Own the day

The big end's form a cross around the main journals, gives a totaly different power delivery which allows the R1 to punchout of corners like a twin with smoother power delivery.

I've never got my head around how a BIG bang and possibly be a smoother delivery than a std 4 cylinder layout! AlexF |

as far as I can see there is at least one piston in motion all the time, removing the harmonic traditionally associated with straight 4s. Isambard Kingdom Brunel said:

I think it's safe to say they don't believe they know exactly how to address any balancing. You wouldn't have heard anything if they didn't have a solution already... On 17th Nov, 2014 Tom Fenton said:

They do sound off-beat,of course. The principal objective was to reduce the propensity of the normal straight four to spin the rear wheel on acceleration,by allowing the tyre to hook up between power strokes.Remember, these sports bikes are dispensing over 180 bhp through a tiny contact patch, especially when cranked over.It was developed for racing and is an undoubted overkill for road use but - fashion dictates. |

That's not a big bang engine.. That's two cylinders igniting at the same time..

Didn't we discuss this a while back when someone proposed doing it on an A-series? Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph

This is the crank fitted to the road going 2009 R1 or else it would not be alowed in a world super bike. There is no pause at TDC or BDC the crank seems to be working all the time. Well it seems this was firsted pioneered back in the thirties but no one created a patent for it. But now Yamaha have. Own the day
