Hi

My quest for a pretty quick, practical and insurable car has led me to a Honda CRX vtec. I am going to have a look at one either this weekend, or next week, and as you lot seem to know everything I wondered what I should be looking out for.

The car has 120k on it, and a full service history. It all looks like it is up together but until I check it out I wont know.

So, what should I be looking out for?

Thanks
James

In my limited experience the engines will last a lifetime, but beware of rust.

Yeah, apparently the bodywork is good on this one, it has had the rear arches replaced so I will be thourough over the rest of the car. but the guy seems honest enough about it.

Isle of Man

get the engine number

the d16a9 or d16zc (16v twin cam) is the more desirable, the other d16's tend to be 16v single cam, and not quite as pokey

but tbh it doesnt matter as after a few months youll be sticking a turbo on anyhow

Somewhere around Swindon

ive had a few now, rust and gearbox's are the weak links, the handlings skittish in the wet

imo mk1 is a modern classic, vtecs are a bit peaky for me

is it a mk1, mk2 or a del slo?

i'm guessing at mk2 seeing as its a VT, unless you're a hairdresser?

engines are pretty bombproof, watch out for rust on the sills, back arches, sunroof panel, sticky rear callipers, water leaks galore, all leather VT seats are cracked and torn.

the mk2's only had 3 different engines, the d16a9 16v dohc, the b16 vtec lump and some 1.5x thing. the 16v and the vtec's are pretty well matched tbh something 1/2 a second difference over the 1/4 on std models.

i loved my old 16v engine, was quite torquey for a honda and went well round town, managed a 15.8 1/4 in it.

looks quite tidy dude! good price for a VT aswell if the bodyworks as mint as it looks, they usually go for around 3k.

It turned out to be a good one, loads of money spent on servicing etc, really up together. Body is good but not mint, but then again its 16 years old. The main thing is no rust.

One thing I did notice though is the lack of low end torque compared to the mini, then agian the fact I have 8000rpm to play with makes up for it.

I'll whack some pictures up when its light.

I never drove my Dad's CRX (non Vtech) but did drive his Vtech Jordan. It could be so slow low down but loved it if you pushed a little harder!

I just joined CRX uk, though I don't think I really have a lot to say, I suppose I ought to introduce myself.

Here is the car, I do like the way it drives.

Edit, strange the pictures have changed to the blurred registration ones I did to stick up on the crx forum.

It is indeed one of the last, registered in 1993.

Nick, Yeah you can have a go. I must say it only really goes hard when the vtec kicks in, but when it does it really goes!

The guy selling it also threw in a set of cams and induction kit he never fitted. Must resist temptation to fiddle!
