You need to measure the resistance between the pins. Typically between the two outer pins you will get 5k ot 10k ohms, whatever the pisition of the spindle. Between an outer pin and the middle pin will change from around 0ohms to the ohms measured between the outer two pins as you sweep the spindle.

my tps does not have a 12v it would explode if it did. it runs on 5v feed from my MJ |

You are correct the feed should be out of the MJ and be 5v. The principal is correct though.
