You need to measure the resistance between the pins. Typically between the two outer pins you will get 5k ot 10k ohms, whatever the pisition of the spindle. Between an outer pin and the middle pin will change from around 0ohms to the ohms measured between the outer two pins as you sweep the spindle.

So to connect it up you need to connect the centre pin to the signal return to the MJ. With the TPS in the closed butterfly position measure between an outer and centre pin. The one that measures the maximum ohms (i.e. 5k or 10k) should be connected to +ve 12V and therefore the other pin is to ground.

Now as you sweep the TPS you should get 0v to 5v on the signal.

Note that the pin layout may not be as described, but the principal is the same.

You are correct the feed should be out of the MJ and be 5v. The principal is correct though.

It would not explode with 12v, but the MJ input might get a bit broken.

Here's a link to Auotlabs which I created to find out how to wire my TPS.

They are not all center wire fed by the way. But as Ben H said get a meter on it.

And you wont do any damage to it, even if you wire it up wrong. Chances are it'll just work in reverse.

Hope it helps.
