Hi all

I picked up a new run around last night. A 998 Advantage.

After about 3 miles, as i was going round a bend, it started to stutter as if i was in to high a gear. So i dropped down a gear and it seemed to go through it and was fine. A little later on (about 5 miles) i was going round a roundabout and it really started to have a fit and kicked out a load of black smoke over my lady friends car who was following behind. After about 800m it just cut out and i coasted off the road.

We called the RAC out at 7.55 and at 12am, they arrived!! Because we were so tired and pissed off, we just told the guy to flat bed it home and i would look at it later.

Please could anyone point me in the direction of what to look for. I know it could be a million and one things but just a general nudge in the right direction would be great. Its almost like there is a fuel feed problem. Its got a new full tank, had an oil and filter change and isnt (from what i could see) dropping anything oil or water wise. No weird smells and other that the stutters, drove like a dream. Its a 1987 D reg if that helps with dodgy brakes!!
The engine turns over fine but just doesnt fire up. Even if it does, it will run for a second or two.

Any help would be great

Thanks

Johnny

First guess, if both events were after bends/roundabout, is crap in the bottom of the tank getting thrown to the pickup and pumped up to the carb causing the needle valve to stick open.

Carb then floods hence black smoke.....

At '87 is it an HS or an HIF carb ??? (one is easy to check, the other a bit more fiddly)

Hi

Not sure which it is. Ive attached a pic of the engine bay if that helps. Also, what if its a leaded head and there is unleaded in the fuel tank?

Did any minis come with an HIF?

If it's original it's an HS.

My HIF38 came from a 50BHP 1275 around 1994 iirc.

Maybe I'm just thinking of 998s, I've just bever seen an HIF38 as standard on a 998 mini.

998 Metros ran HIF38 when they were still fitting HS4s to 998 minis.

This isn't helping Johnny though.

You can only work through a few things to try and find the problem. I'd start by inspecting and cleaning the carb and checking for a spark.

Fair point, I've lost track of what goes on what, so many parts get backfitted from Metros....

Johnny, I can't see any attached piccys (apart from your other project) to tell...

Take the air filter off and photo it again.....

Looks like HS from the damper plug but can't be sure with air cleaner on.

If it is HS, easy to check if the needle valve and float bowl have got crap in them.

Well it had been sitting for a very long time but the guy had been using it. I did put £5 in it last night ontop of what was in the tank. Its now nearly full. Would it matter if it was 4star he had in there? Not sure if its been converted for unleaded. Would it really matter?

update.

Got home and had a look around straight away and found the pipe that goes to the dizzy from the car wasnt connected. Sorted that and nothing happened.

Took the spark plugs out and they were all sparking.

Took the dash pot out and had a look around in there. No crap from what i couls see and the needle was fine and straight.

Got her in doors the try and turn the car over and no fuel was coming out the little hole the needle goes into. Not sure if any is but just in case. Then also got her to tap the throttle a few tmes while turning it over and still none came out.

Where else can i look?

ive take pics of it all to if that helps?

check the electrical connections- particulary around the dizzy and coil - although the symptoms suggest fueling, I've known for certain movements to intermitantly break connections as well

Without the dashpot on you won't see fuel coming out, and the SU has no pump, so pushing the thro
ttle will have no effect either.

Check att the pipes on the carb, especially breathers.

If it's an HS (no photos yet to confirm......) just disconnect the fuel inlet pipe (and there maybe an "overflow" as well) and undo the three screws that hold the float chamber lid on.....

Lift the lid off and look inside, and at the valve in the lid.....

Does anyone know how to remove the bowl the float sits in? Ive taken the float out and from what i can see, there looks like something blocking the hole in the square bit at the bottom of the chamber where the fuel exits. Ive checked the pump and fuel is gettin to the float bowl, but does move on. It seems the block is there somewhere. Also at the bottom of the bowl was a load of brown silty stuff either side of the square out pipe. Ive cleaned that all away
