Folks,
There seem to be conflicting views on this, so I'm wondering if anyone has the proper answer.
Will any (5,6,7) speedo spindle mesh with any (15,16,17,18) speedo pinion?
The Guessworks speedo calculator suggests that any combination is possible, but a 2008 Mini magazine "masterclass" article says that it is not.
If not, what are all of the available sets?
Thanks
Matt

i now there are two types of 7 tooth spindle, the 7 tooth used in the later minis (mpi?) have a different helix shape thingy their part no begins with TMX IIRC, there is a specific pinion to go with this, as long as you steer clear of them two i thing your fine.

In theory, for each of the chosen teeth number of the plastic gears, they come in three specific helix angles to match either a 5 or 6 or 7 tooth steel gear.

The plastic gear is colour coded (white, green, yellow IIRC) according to which helix angle it has.

However, because there wasn't a full range of combinations ever required for standard applications, there isn't a full range of three colour codes for each number of teeth on a plastic gear.... (if that makes sense).

If you lay the three steel gears beside each other, the helix angle difference is really obvious because the number of teeth is small. If you lay two plastic gears, same number of teeth but different colour codes, beside each other, the difference is a lot less noticable, but they are different.

In practice, I think the plastic deforms enough to tolerate the different steel wheels.

Also be aware, some of the Metro sourced plastic wheels have a slightly undersize square on the end of the shaft which stops a Mini speedo cable from engaging....

Thanks for the replies so far....

Rod - who will have the most complete collection of gears for sale? It'd be good to get the right number of teeth AND the right helix on each gear, if possible...

I honestly don't know - I first realised it when I noticed different part numbers for plastic wheels with the same number of teeth but with references to the colours in one of the usual catalogue (can't remember which). Also, as some come from Metros, you won't find them all listed in Mini catalogues.

So I did a bit of research on the web and dug out all my old spare ones and sure enough, sometimes there were different colours for the same number of teeth (although on old ones the colours are quite faded). So I just worked out which were matched sets and with the ratios I wanted.

Apart from the "special" MPI one Joe mentions above (which I have never seen), all the 5s I have seen have been the same as each other, as have the 6s etc (although a 5 is obviously very different to a 6 etc....).

But when you compare, for example, an 18tooth plastic that belongs with a 5 tooth steel to an 18tooth plastic that belongs with a 6 tooth steel the difference is much less, if it weren't for the colour difference, it would be hard to spot.

Some of the colour coding differences might also be down to some coming from Metros (and then you have the added problem that a Mini cable might not fit as the metro square hole is ever so slightly smaller)

So I don't think it's really an issue unless you're a perfectionist.

Plus there were only a limited number of standard steel/plastic combinations so it is highly likely you will have to "mismatch" them anyway unless you have a Final Drive, wheel/tyre, and speedo head combination that exactly matches a factory car.
