i was out working on my girlfriend's brother's car with him because he got the brake cylinder's replaced by a garage, we were checking them out because the brakes were rubbing like mad, i tried to undo the wheel nuts with a brace and i could't so i got my torque wrench out to check them, the book said 66lb/ft on the wheel nuts (renault clio)
it took me 150 lb/ft to undo them! bloody hell! i thought over tightening was just as bad as under tightening?

shouldnt really undo things with a torque wrench, but like you say, you shouldnt need to either. Trouble with gargaes is they use a windy gun for everything!!

Im suprised they took that much without breaking tbh, ive snapped wheel studs before using just a short breaker bar! (in my defense i way only about 14-15)

And on the 7th day........... God created turbochargers!

i just changed the rear pads on my bosses van (nissan primestar) and the wheelbrace supplied was only 12" long and a realy strange shape ??? we happened to have a 6' steel tube to extened it with and that only just did it !!!! (wouldnt like to have to try and do a puncture on the motorway)

self adjusting pistons are a right bastard ,i had to strip one caliper just to work out how to screw the piston back in *angry*
and then had to make a tool to do the job !!!

I never let the monkeys who do tyres tighten my wheel nuts up. Let them take them off, then I put them back and torque up myself using a torque wrench. Also they do a good line in busting your locking wheel nuts using a windy gun on them as well......

But my dad loves them for doing it. He runs a breakdown company and gets plenty of call outs to people who have a puncture and the std pathetic wheel wrench won't shift the nuts.....

Doesn't it take 1/2 the force to undo something than it does to tighten it up? (roughly)

i.e. if your wheels took 150lbft to undo they could have been tightened to 300+.

the noise when the nut actually undid was terrible, the nut was so tight to the wheel that ist had alsmost worn a groove in to it.

not geoff capes......his best mate......mr chicago pneumatic windy gun......

Although if it made a horrible noise as it came off it could be the combination of heat and rusty threads hasn't helped you undo it.
I always use copper grease on any car I work on. Greasing the threads lets you get a better idea of whether or not you have torqued properly, as if the threads are dry and a bit rusty, often friction can build up enough to indicate you have torqued a wheel bolt correctly when in fact it may not be truly torqued.

the threads were not rusty, i think i might check the front wheels for him soon, they had them off too, when i did them back up to 66lb/ft i tried to undo them again with the wheel brace and it was much easier, when we started even with nearly all my weight on it (13 stone, need to lay off the pies a bit!) there was no way the nud was coming undone.

i will , i have some in my toolbox somewhere i think, i always used to think the only use for it was to stop brakes squeling i only recently found out it stops things seizing up, do you just a little bit on each stud?

Copper grease is great stuff. Use it on pads like you say. But also any threaded fixings which are prone to seize. I use it on wheel bolts/nuts, exhaust manifold studs, thermostat housing studs, and last but not least, rear subby mount bolts....

hell copper grease everything!!

I work mostly with tyre's at Rapid Fit be it the only honest one in the country!!

After market locking wheel nuts tend to be the worst so a bit of gentle pursuation when undoing and doing up with breaker bar is needed.

My friend had his astra tyres changed and the lockers wernt even done up!! Thats at ATS!!

A good job done is one done by yourself I say.

Cheers, Stevo
