So the goverment will now give you a £2k 'scrappage' allowance on a brand new car if you trade in your 10 year old car?

mmm... So you buy an old car for say £100, then drive it to your local friendly dealer and get a £2k discount on your brand new car. Saving £1900.

Sounds like a plan to me... *happy*

In Norway we have such a deal, albeit it's £150, and you don't need to buy a new car. Here the car has got to have a current MOT and Tax.

This is supposedly based on a greener motoring campaign.

Personally, I think that it is a totally flawed scheme that will put an even larger strain on the environment when all of these perfectly good cars are disposed off.

It just means that if your car is over 10 years old and has MOT then it is worth considerably more than a 9 year old car with no MOT...

I guess all the environmentalists out there haven't considered teh impact manufacturing the new cars will have on the environment...

In the actual budget statement (download it from BBC) it says it must have been owned for more than 12 months.

And anyway, a new car depreciates by more than £2k (because of one-off sales taxes on it) as soon as you drive it out of the showroom.

It just means you are not paying quite as much tax as usual.....

Scheme also ends March 2010 (or sooner if the money runs out) and is only with "participating manufacturers"....

Just an election gimmick.

Exactly, what a crazy idea.

Excluding classic cars, I could imagine it for cars around 20 - 25 years, but 10? - nothing wrong with a ten year old car!!

There are plenty of 10yr old cars with lean burn, fuel injection, catalytic converters etc. It seems to me that 10yrs is far too young.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Precisely!

Don't be fooled. This (and most other government backed green campaigns) is all about money, not the environment.

"Green" sell better then "sex" at the moment. Car advertising used to comprise of semi-naked models. Now they are surrounded by flowers and cutesy animals.

What better sales pitch than...
"Buy a new car or the world will come to an end and you will all die"

Wankers!.. I'm ashamed to be in the advertising industry.

Effing ridiculous idea.

A huge proportion of the environmental damage caused by cars is during their manufacture and disposal.

This policy is specifically aimed at increasing car manufacture and will result in good re-useable cars scrapped.

Obviously the Government is just paying lip service to environmental issues.

Effing Effing B@st@rds.

A further thought....

UK new car sales 2007, 2.4 million
2008, 2.1 million so let's say 2 million in a bad year.

Government have only actually allocated £300 million for this scheme and want the "participating manufacturers" to match them, so say £600 million.

So a quick bit of maths says there is only enough money for 300,000 cars.... No wonder they say it ends March 2010 or "when the money runs out" ....

An even bigger election gimmick than I first thought.

And where are these 300,000 cars going to go ??? My local scrappy told me that all his steel goes to China at the moment....

Who actually has enough money to buy a new car and also has a 10 year old car in their possession ??? Not many people.

I'm about to buy a new car and the wifes Mini 35 would do nicely as a trade in. But I wont participate on principal.

I don't think that this scheme is aimed a the environment, mor stimulating the economy.

As it happens it might work out quite well for me if my missus buys a new car and I chop in my £400 banger. then we see her car privately.

Apart from instances like Wil's above - how many people that run a car over 10 years old will be in a financial position to buy a brand new one - £2k off or not?

As for your scheme in Norway Vegard - surely an MoT'd car (or your equivalent of) is worth more than £150 to anybody? People would snap your hand off over here, even if it failed the next MoT in a year's time!

A 25 year old car over here with an MOT will be worth around £500.

To get the £150, the car has not have to have an MOT or tax, ANY car will get that if scrapped.

I now see that I sort of mistyped previously. There has been campaings here where you got £600 for a car if it had an MOT and TAX. (no need to buy a new). This did indeed result in a massive scrapping of half old cars, still perfectly useable.

Remember that a car worth £500 in the UK, is worth ten times that over here.
