ok, I know its not a mini so hold back on the abuse!

the missus has got a TT with a clutch problem; gradually it looses pressure to the point that ther pedal is on the floor. With a bit of careful pumping (I await the comments) it will come back up to pressure.

The local specialist had a look at it a few weeks ago and advised the usual suspects are a fault with the pedal assembly (but this usually gets gradually worse) or the slave cylinder but this is usually evident by leaking fluid. God knows what can be seen with these but apparently it or the general area was dry so this was ruled out and the master became suspect.

It got much worse last week and on the back of this we had the master cylinder changed this afternoon; as you would guess, on the way back home the pressure dropped again. I've spoken to the garage who are going to take it back in for a look but they are a little perplexed.

Now through all of this I've not needed to top the fluid up so that would suggest its not a leak although the symptoms would suggest hydraulic - any ideas guys??

leeds/wakefield.

maybe the slave is leaking slightly, and not showing any external signs as its hidden in the bellhousing,

master cylinders are always at fault on these. good job you got that changed. as carl says really try the slave.

is this an concentric (or something along those lines) release bearing on these?

so the release bearing IS the slave cylinder, and if it was to leak it would leak inside the bell-housing.

do you mean it looses pressure when held down, and then doesnt come back up untill you pull it up and then pump the pressure back up?

or do you mean that as you keep disengaging/engaging the clutch it will eventually loose the pedal until the bite is on the floor?

im a little confused with the situation.

yes its one of those concentric slaves; it was basically gradually getting closer to the floor each time it was used, sometimes it went from a perfect pedal to nothing at all. If the pedal was pumped (full down and then released) a few times, it started to come back to life.

anyway, took it back to the garage this afternoon and it completely packed up while I was there; we now think it is the pressure plate that is fecked - the thought being the fingers have 'lost' there spring and remaining partially depressed.

All i know is were down to 1 car on the road as the mini is out of ticket and its a right pain.

Its getting stripped hopefully tomorrow afternoon so will find out then

seen this before but the randomness of the pedal to my eyes points at the concentric slave or the master, even though its a new item doesnt meen its a good item.

do you know if this can be changed without removing the box?? it will save a lot of time and cash if so as they have quoted 6 hrs for the job

Cheers James, its the 1.8 quattro. If its a box out anyway, given most of the labour is in removal of this anyway, I'd stick a clutch in it anyway.

To be fair, I do know the guy quite well and he even offered to get one of the boys to do it as a homer to save me some cash - time is of the essence though so I just booked it in; as a guide, he didn't take anything off me for the master cylinder

sounds like a pretty genuine bloke. i'll have a look of tech data tomorrow and get you a book time.

seeing as its the quattro, 6 hrs doesnt sound far off.

aye if its a quattro 6 hours is about right for someone who has done a few :) could you quickly try pinching the hydraulic line with a pipe clamp when the pedals bad? as if the pedal remains bad your new master cylinders faulty. would quickly rule it out!

EDIT. can only do this if theres a rubber line, VAG like to use plastic lines for this kinda work that you cant block :(

cheers guys; hopefully get it back today so will let you know what the outcome is.

on the back of it, she has decided the car is too un-reliable and expensive to maintain so wants a new car! I can't recall her paying for anything yet!

Right. I've just looked at tech data. it gives 1hr for the slave so its obviously not a box out job.

But! it gives 7.5hrs for the clutch replacement so your saving some money there!

EDIT: Site looks top Carl.

Cheers James, its handy to know he is being real about it;

I spoke to him this morning and they had already checked the slave just in case!
