I'm looking into building a car transporter trailer. I don't have a problem constructing the actual trailer its just that I was unsure as to the pro's and con's of single or twin axels.
I was looking at van axels (obviously non rear wheel drive) as some have a very low axel 5" -6"below the centre of the wheels.
Any thoughts or help greatly apprieciated*smiley*

I'd be tempted to buy the proper axles complete with the brakes - a bit costly but worth it in the long run

might also be worth looking for a late twin axle caravan chassis - I wouldn't use the chassis but i'm sure the axles and a few other bits would be useful (not sure what the hitch would be rated at)

It is cheaper to buy a used trailer - I ended up spending the wrong side of £400 on this many years ago. It was a cut down shit thing that I made into a good trailer - it even survived a crash when Minimark owned it
Excuse picture of drunk friend asleep on it at Pod.

Wouldn't a van axle be too heavy?

I've been looking into this recently as we need something to tow the Miglia.

Unless you can get the components very cheap then it is cheaper to buy a used trailer.

But used trailers, particularly for small cars, fetch very high prices. A used Brain James Minno Max went for £1220 last week on ebay. They are only £1195 + VAT new.

I have more or less decided to buy a new trailer, but I'm still trying to work out where to keep it if I do.

I would be very interested to see if you can use van axles.

I thaught about this and when you add everything up (unless everything is secondhand and begged and borrowed) it costs a fortune.

Obviously single axel isnt as stable as a twin.

As paul has obviously watching Ebay aswell you will find they do anything between 1000-1200 .

There has been a few single axel though for £600ish.

Ive just managed to get myself a PRG twin axel for the mini, is only 11 foot long so where i have the mini at the moment it fits in perfect. Obviously ive got to keep the mini on it (then push it off to work on) but it doesnt take up any more room than a normal car.

Supposedly an old commer van or commer space wagon axel is good, might be hard to get hold of now a days

A mate of mini has a semi high top transit which he has trimmed the tubs on the wheelarches inside , fitted some channels and an electric winch - he has to unbolt the arches but it works quite well - will try and find a picture

Just buy one already built, proper modern trailer axles cost a fortune, add on the cost of the coupling, the metalwork and the time needed, its just not worth the hassle.
I bought mine of ebay a few years ago for 400 quid, I've probably spent that again on getting it legal and useable.
I'm going to sell it and get a tilting bed one to make getting the minis on easier.

mine is a old caravan chassis with independant suspension...its so unstable. Worth trying to source a beam axle of some kind. Thought about 2 escort van axles....cut & shut them to fit.

The ford conect van "Postman Pats" looks a good axel as the leaf spring axel is lower than the wheel centres. So cut and shut to the right width, build a frame and maybe a good trailer.

Nice trailer, I like the folding A frame on it. That's something I wish I had on mine.

I should be able to get that in the garage with a mini on it and still get the another two in. I've got 33 foot to play with so not much to spare.

I was thinking about buying one like that, but the folding hitch costs another £600.

Was that the one in St Neots, Cambs?

He was also selling a Motorhome with a towbar that the wife was interested in.
