Im looking at doing the K1100 16v conversion (starting to source the bits) and i am looking into peoples projects for tips etc.

Now iv seen a couple that have dry decked the block for water and oil and re fed it out the ends.

What are the reasons for doing this?

Good points, bad points?

Cheers

As far as im aware dry decking in terms of water flow , is done so that the water flows the entire length of the block before going up to the head and back into the rad. As for the oil, it just easier than modifying the deck of the block to move the oil way inline with the oilway in the head.

plus= consistent temp across the head, reduced hotspots locally. Reliability. peace of mind in race situations, when done correctly!! with 16 V, availability of gaskets(ie bk450)

minus= Cost, loss of originality (though slappin on a k head!! this has gone out the window so) , cost , actual gain in reality!! cost!

I am trying to cost out my twink engine and also find someone to dry deck the head.

What sort of price would I likely be looking at to have this carried out? The work would include welding the plate on the end of the head and the water feed to the other end. Is there anyone out there who is interested / confident in doing this for me?

I can arrange the skimming so it would only be the welding really.

Cheers

James

Just to clarify as some have missed the date - THE ORIGINAL THREAD IS APRIL 2009!

I dry decked mine so I could run a bk450 gasket. It could be psychological but im sure it runs cooler too.

Hi mate can you tell me how does this give you more bhp is it because of the engine runs cooler?

tbh i was taking the piss but imo its half true, the idea of dry decking it to ensure total coolant flow across all cylinders and all combustion chambers to aid pushing the engine harder and closer to the limit, one thing is for sure there seems to be less people melting 4th piston nowadays there melting 2nd instead *happy*

another bonus head gasket swap from start to finnish in 20 mins, no coolant loss *wink*

I had mine Dry Decked... Originally so I could use the Cometic Head gasket I found cheap on eBay... Sure overall it worked out more this way tho!

Plus it looks good to have another (orange) pipe linking the head to the block!
