I dont think they will. I do remember a long time back not being able to get the spider to fit into the pot on a disc brake conversion in the end I swaped them out for some off of a 1275 gear box and they slid in fine.

I never did investigate what the problem was but it was a first as I also assumed all pots were of the same dimensions.

The pot joints on my 1275 are from the original 998 in the car. I just slotted them in without problem.

As long as you keep both halves of the joint together you will have no problems. There do seem to be different sizes, I think perhaps some have been reclaimed by remachining and this is why they are bigger.

I have also swapped them around - internal bits may be different sizes (when they get reconditioned) as Tom says, but a complete joint should be OK.

Have a look at at the open end of the part that enters the gearbox - just before the internal splines start there is a small chamfer. This is to compress the spring ring (on the gearbox output shaft) as the joint enters and I have seen this area badly machined on some in the past.

Also check the spring ring itself (on the output shaft where it pokes outside the gearbox) isn't damaged or stretched and too far out of it's groove.

I've used 1275 pot joints with a 998 box recently with no problem.
