Hello all,

I have got oil leaking from the drive shaft seals, when replacing the one on the passenger side I have noticed that there is play in the shaft I can wiggle it up and down I presume this is a very bad sign and it the dreaded diff pin wear?

Thanks for any help its my first diff job.

Graham

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

just checking as I dont have pot joints I removed the carrier for the cross joints and the movement is in the shaft sticking out from the diff

The shafts that stick out of the diff run through a small bush (one side in the diff cage, the other side in the crownwheel itself). That is where your play will be with the pot joint or cross carrier removed, nothing to do with the diff pin.

There is always some play because the length of the bush is so short compared to the stubshaft and it obviously requires a certain amount of clearance for the output shafts to be able to rotate relative to the diff.

How much is acceptable is a matter of judgement - when the pot joint or earlier cross carrier is inserted, most of the load is transferred to the much bigger bushes in the output housings (the bush just behind the oil seal).

The fact you have leaking oil seals is a good sign these bigger bushes are worn - once they wear the little ones follow.....
