Anyone know how to remove anodising without cocking up the surface underneath?

Also, anyone know where to get bright anodising done? as on a grille so it looks like chrome

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

Paul, I've done quite a bit of this at home. You can simply use caustic soda in water. Will only take a few mins

Jim, is that stripping it or bright anodising?

Im looking at replacing my bumpers, grille moustache, headlight rims, rear 1/4 light surrounds and door glass surrounds in aluminium but they need to look like chrome still.

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

That was for striping, but doing large things like bumpers would work out cheaper to get done by the pro's

Jim, I've done some electrolitical de-rusting with a battery charger as a little experiment.
Soda in water, connect - from charger to rusted part + to a piece of metal elsewhere in the water.

Work very well.

Did you do it this way?

Did you also do plating yourself -> more details?

Han, I'll get some photo's of my process next time I do it. it uses caustic soda, battery acid, brake cleaner, lead, battery charger, central heating header tank, clothes dye and a tea urn.

My elementary chemistry tells me that if you put aluminium in caustic soda it will fizz a lot and disappear completely in quite a short time.
I have stripped the anodising off the horrible blue and red hose finishers with oven cleaner and re-polished them with Solvol, but you do have to be careful not to leave it on too long as it also contains caustic soda.Only worth it for small items IMHO.
