Just a quikie. I foolishly offered to put an engine together for a friend now Iwish I hadnt. It is nothing fancy just a 1310 with sw5 and mg head. But that is by the by. He supplied all the parts gaskets etc and I started building over the weekend. The crank is standard and I have standard bearings. I have fitted the mains etc fine and I can fit 3 out of the four big ends but every time I fit the 4th the whole engine locks up! I can move it but only with some serious force. When I take it apart everything seems fine! Any suggestions? Has anyone else had this? Iam torqueing the caps to 33ft lbs as per the haynes manual I have ( a metro one not that it should make a dfference) It is an A+ engine.

Unbolt the other 3, bolt up just that one and see what happens

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

Could the big end cap be 180 degrees round?

Check the big end of the rod is actually round without the bearing fitted, it could be pinching the journal

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

Is the conrod the right way around (ie, the offset in the right direction).

Or, assuming it's a shrink fit gudgeon pin, is it properly central.

I'd agree with Tom, bearing 180 out?
I did that on a Saab turbo engine, it did exactly the same, just locked!

Well I got it sussed. One of the little locating lugs on the bearing would appear to be out of shape. I tired the single conrod as per Pauls suggestion (thank you) andit still bound up. I then tried a different pair of bearings in and it was fine. I swapped them back over on at a time so I could find which one was causing the problem. I found and ever so slight amount of polishing just next to where th locating tab is. It is all I can put it down to. And it looks fine at first glance. I got my money back this morning and have a new set on route from mini spares. Thanks for your help
