Hi all, Quick question as I can't seem to find the answer/advice i'm after.

Different power levels for the road in a turbo/supercharged mini.

say, 130bhp, 150bhp, 170bhp and 200bhp

Obviously 130bhp will be alot more reliable for the road, but not as quick, But in the 4 powers I've put, how reliable are they at them levels. I'm after a quick mini, but dont want to much hassle. I dont mind a little bit, its to be expected. But if I was to build a 200bhp mini, would I be pissing in the wind using it everyday.

I'm thinking more 150/170bhp, But how 'quick' is a 170bhp mini, standard Paul Smith LE weight too I may add.

Answers on a post card please.

Lightweight racer coming soon.

weeellll,

theres lots of different answers to that, depending on many things from how big your balls are, to how clever/stupid you are to where you live.

reliability wise, theyre may not be much difference between a 50 hp and 250 hp motor, for example how often are you going to be using 2 bar boost @ 7k in top in west london? or rather if you have a 200 hp motor and keep the boost down to run 130 hp it will be about as reliable as a motor built for 130 hp.

personally on the roads where i live i dont think i would go over 150 hp as the roads are so bad, bumps, potholes etc.

I like the idea of this thread. My daily drive mini has a shade over 100 and it's nowhere near enough for me lol

Working up the BHP ladder.

As stated, build quality has a lot to play in it. Mines 160bhp and good as gold. The trick is if you dont want to use 200bhp dont push the go pedal as hard.

Its not just the motor you will have to worry about if you want silly power I ran one of mine at 1.5 bar on standard suspension with standard 4 pot callipers possibly the dumbest thing I ever did! If your not going all in you will hurt yourself!

how does standard calipers and suspension have anything to do with it? people on here are running high 100's and early 200's with cooper s calipers and disks with uprated pads... thats pritty much standard practic, as for suspension as long as you can handle a car around a roundabout imo you will be fine on a std setup for a daily driver.

I would have said 140 bhp with as high a CR you can get with as low boost to make a nice driveable car with little lag. As we have commented earlier a detuned racer is soooooooooo un pleasant for the road!

I think Scruffy's about right. At 140bhp you can still get away with a helical drops, just, and you'll be ok with a helical box too. Both very important for daily drives IMO.

With a well built motor, you'll have a broad power range and get to 60 in 6 andabit seconds (at a guess). Potentially good MPG too. Look at Robert's car for a great example of a perfect compromise for a powerful road car.

Reliability is a funny thing; I personally think it can be split in two:

1) Everyday reliability - Your car starts every day and gets you to work and back. Faults like flat battery, ignition faults, carb faults, electric faults can be included in this. All these potential faults can be controlled by good maintenance.

2) Longevity - Really, how long before parts wear out. So engine, box, transfer gears etc. It dosen't matter how much you maintan something if it is wearing at a rate dependant on use from day one. You can improve this reliability by mechanical sympathy.

So based on this you could have a 200 bhp mini and it has the potential to be very reliable. But for the reasons above, I'd suggest slighlty lower power.

Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph

I agree with Wil.

130/140bhp will be plenty for an everyday mini. I'm positive I wouldnt want to be driving everywhere with SC Drops & Box.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.
