My insurance is up for renewal, and was wondering if any of you wonderful folks minded telling me which insurers you use for your rocket machines?

An insurer that understands Minis and turbos would be good...*wink*

I called Direct line for a joke.... the asked how much the engine horsepower had been increased (percentage), they guestimated about 30 percent. The original car was a Mayfair 998. Try 300->400 percent (based on an old 998 block).
They didnt have a tick box for it...

Flux are frigging useless when it comes to paperwork... If you do go with them, send everythign by recorded delivery, and keep a note of exactly what was in the envelope...

Ignore HIC claims of 'trackday cover'... The small print reads that no other cars are allowed on the track, and that full marshalls and safety team must be present...
Fooking useless.

Ok wtf happened to HIC?
ME: 24, 4 yeas no claims, no accidents, Electronic engineer.
Place: low-ish risk, in garage storage.
The Car: turbo converted, bored to 1293, about 125HP, billet 4 pots and vented disks. Updated suspension and various other little bits.
Agreed value of 3000.

HIC quote: 1400 quid, or lucky at a grand.

Like I said: WTF?

I'm with Footman James at the moment on an interesting 1966 1293 mini. (Which is now off the road, again). £113 fully comp, locked up in a garage, blah, blah. I said, "Look, I'm planning some modifications here, should I look for another company?" the woman said "Sir, if you write a letter to us, we will deal from there" The impression I got was that if the mods were relatively sensible, that wouldn't carry a massive premium. I didn't mention the "Rollcage" swearword, I also said that I was intending to build a Supercharged 1293 engine producing approx 85hp (Yeah right!) which would be used solely to provide extra welly to pull a taller FD for motorway driving comfort.

If I stuff the thing seriously enough to necessitate a full car autopsy, the engine will probably be farked and we all know how difficult it is to put a power figure on a pile of bits.

My definition of insurance is the cheapest bit of A4 paper I can legally show the cops, if I get a producer and get my car back. If you pay for a better service, they will still shag you with small print. That's my attitude to them and it seems to cut a lot of crap.

Just phone up FJ and say "I've got a lairy mini, I want fully comp insurance, unlimited milage, I want my car back if I crash it, I want to pay less than £200" They work on the premise you are a car fanatic, have invested heavily and will not be stuffing it through the first hedge/pushchair/etc.

I hear some people have had problems getting their cars back though. Oh, FJ don't take NCB into account and so when you have finished with them, your next insurer will arse rape you.

Bugger off, I'm getting there.

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

you havent just got to worry about writing your own car off, or even a car for that matter. if its a person and you have undeclared things on there and arent insured i dont fancy a stretch inside....

The other problem with HIC is that if you ever need to claim don't expect any money out of them for 18 months (my bro waited this long) and know them by first names by the time you've finished cos you'll have phoned them so much. Stay clear IMO.

My Mini is with Footman James £350

And mu Subaru is with Direct Line £350

How about the Mini World insurance/other specialist "mini" insurances. I am planning to do some shopping around in due course and will publish my results.

Back to being uninsured due to unannounced modifications, what constitutes a uninsurable modification? Fluffy seat covers, Motolita Wheel? Different headlight bulbs? The fuckers will try to screw you every which way, I would like to see what constitutes an uninsurable modification. (Big kev exhaust :) )

Bugger off, I'm getting there.
