Working up the BHP ladder.

Just curious on people 0-60 feet times on the drag strip. Was playing at santa pod at the weekend but just having trouble getting off the line, really having to ride the clutch quite hard until i get boost.

0-60 feet was about 3.3 seconds on all runs.

Maybe its the 3.1CWP that's killing my starts? First gear is also 2.1 but comparing my timing sheets im sure that first 60 feet is particularly slow.

2.3 with an open diff and 195/45/13 continentals

2.1 with same diff, final drive, and tyres but non-turbo!

needless to say alot of the 60ft is in the driver, and i still havnt mastered my car :)

if your having to ride the clutch hard, i take it you have plenty of grip?

turbo 16v k-series 11.9@118.9 :)

Not really, just 12's with 165/60 Falkens on. Seems to just take a while to make boost.

If you are riding the clutch to make boost, as soon as it does make boost you are getting a big lump of torque, this overwhelmes the tyres resulting in chronic wheelspin, thus little forward motion, thus crap 60ft time.
Try launching from enough revs to get it away without massive wheelspin, then hopefully you are rolling when it makes boost, and can try to modulate the throttle a bit to feel for grip.
I have done 2.1 in the DON on road tyres.

I think my best was around 2.4 with a 2.95 final drive, 4 pin diff, standard metro turbo gear ratio's, 13" wheels and Yoko A539's.

its not the long overall diff ratio thats killnig your 60 ft times,

its too much weight, no where near enought torque and poor traction for when and if you did have enough torque,

example,

when i was running one engine in the lightweight,
i uaed the hoosier jr2 tyre at 5lbs max pressure, used a 3.9 fd and a clubman gearset,i also used nitrous, and my car weighed 398kgs .

i could comfortably [and for best results] launch in 2nd gear using about 60hp of gas with 5lbs of tyre press , would comfortably pull 1.7 60ft and have the tiniest hint of wheel spin for a few revolutions then amazing traction .

on a fully prepped track at the pod ive a ticket that shows 1.58 secs .

i recently pulled a 1.86 sec 60 in the Don at the pod an a newly glued surface,

my twinnie will pull 1.5/6 secs on a good start line,

and yes its strange sensation pulling 2 g at launch,

carl

Thanks the replies. Interesting topic this, carl is probably quite close as mine isn't a stripped out street racer and is carrying lots of extra crap that will soon be removed (probably save 80KG or so). The engine isn't running full tilt yet but i cant see winding up the boost helping the launch? On the plus side the clutch is now holding strongly.

Also it isn't that it spins off the line, as carl says is physically seems to lack the torque at low rpm to spring off the mark.

Damn Impressive that carl, that on the M and H slicks you have?. was up at the pod a few weeks ago with a friends CRX running a nice turbo setup, the new glue seems to work well as with the drag slicks we had too much grip and kept bogging the motor down.

Im hoping on improving upon my 1.78 on road tyres this year if I can. or just throw caution to the wind and go slicks!

my times are for a full weight road car too. with tools etc. as tom says thekey is to lauch kinda off boost, and let the boost progressively build. it may feel slower to you as there isnt much fanfare and wheelspin, but your actual 60ft times will be much better as you dont overcome the traction limit of your wheels!

you wont do any better than 2.0/1 in a proper road car with proper road tyres so that should guve you a realistic goal to aim for :) fwd's cant really spring of the mark unless there on very good tyres :) imho ofcource!
