Alright chaps,

What is it thats chatters/knocks in mini engines when they are on the point of stalling/at very low revs. I remember pretty much all of the engines ive had do it when at very low revs (just about to stall) Its espcially noticeable when the idle is set too low or mixture is wrong and the engine revs drop very very low and then it just about recovers.

Is it the timing chain?

What you are hereing is presure waves accross the the top of the piston causing it to flutter in the bore, and the noise is it hiting the bore wall.

Cheers for the answers chaps. I know about the drops chattering and it wasnt those.
I only asked as ive heard it on a few engines before, standard and modified and was just curious as to what it was?

I take it thats it isnt particularly good for either the bore or piston.
