I was playing with cranes at work the other day. The small yellow one is a measly 25 tonner. The big yellow one however is a monster, 500 tonner, comes with 3 artic trucks and 8 men.

All to do a repair on the red crane in the middle, which I look after. All good fun.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Not when the load is worth 1/2 a mill and you are the AP!!! I'm quite happy for them not to drop it!

Yes, I have been on a job witnessing the lift and it got about 2ft off the ground, then the wedges slipped and the rope let the hook go *hehe!*

Hate to think what it would have been like if it was over the building when it let go

I'm in mining/construction, so we get some big lifts too. This is one my guys did last year:

To give you some idea of scale, that is a 34m long section of conveyor weighing in at 150 tonne.

That looks just like a place my mate has just gone to work- you don't work at a Rio Tinto site based outside of Perth do you!?

Don't play with cranes Kids!

This happened directly after lifting a shutter towards him on a slope, the silly bastard span round to track up the slope, with the jib still fully up, and over it went!

Thank god it wasn't on my site.

Tom, is that one of the MASSIVE Ainscough 500t Supalift cranes? I had one of them on one of my sites last year, pretty monster crane. good bunch of lads too, I got a free fleece :)

That was at Fortesque Metals Cloudbreak mine.
In the same neck of the woods as Rio Tinto, just a quick 2,000 km out from Perth!

I've done a few jobs like that, but not quite that big a crane.

I always find it a very strange experience planning one of these lifts, sitting in isolation at your PC, then you get out on site and the scale of what you have organised frightens you pooless.

I only got it because it was an XL, our Agent is about 5'9 and 8 stone, our section engineer is similarly sized, polish, and only wears dodgy jumpers, and I'm 6'2'' and perfectly XL sized!
