Hi iv done a fair bit of searching for a TDC dial guage e.g. cromwells etc and cant find what im after. Does anyone know where I can find one of these ideally with a magnetic base and adjustable arm - most of what I see has a very short measuring pointer - no where near long enough to get through the spark plug hole and to the top of the piston@!

Anything will do to go through down to the piston! For e.g. a long 1/4" drive extension bar.

I have borrowed something very similar to this:

With the magnetic base and adjustable arm, is it OK to use a 1/4' drive extension bar as a seat to take the pointer as you say Tom? Just thinking the size of the socket hole in the extension bar, and the size of the pointer it may be sliding around a bit, would this be an issue?

You can use anything that suits. It is only being used to transfer the movent to the guage.
