1275 Maestro engine....

Was thinking the block looks very similar and would possibly convert with mini everything else bolted to it.

Any thoughts??

I amthinking through a silly idea and was thinking MPi block to get the oil filter way from the front right, then I thought about this.

Probably more reaily and chaeply available than an MPi block.

I've seen a mini with a block like this in before. you can use the mini crank etc in this block to convert it to transverse.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Working up the BHP ladder.

Don't take my word for it but i think the block is different on the bottom, cos the gearbox is mounted on the end.

That's what I was thinking. Maestro block with everything thrown away and mini/metro guts installed.

Leaving lots of space under the alternator *smiley*

You want to have a look at some of Tadge44's posts. I would have thought that it would be the same as converting an inline a series engine. It can be done (thats where Tadge comes in) but its not as straight forward as swapping the bits i believe.

I think I will keep my eyes open for maestro or Marina engine then.

I have a 1275 A+ in need of a rebuild so it could load some of it's parts to see if it all goes together and what works/needs work....

Vegard says that an inline block can be fitted to a transverse gearbox and who am I to argue with him.(I agree actually )
I have two A+ inline blocks available, one totally bare and the other in course of dismantling,if you are desperate.

Thanks for the advice and the offer. I'm not desperate atm. I'm just thinking ahead for my future engine plans and looking at my options for blocks with oil filters out of the way.

i would have thought moggy minor owners might be interested.

the moggy minor guys like the Marina/ Itals; up here, I've probably seen more marinas on the road than maestros

perhaps they think that cos the maestro/monty is FWD that the engine is a transverse unit like the mini.

not sure - I think it is because they can use the box, brakes etc as well

I think the rear main cap will need to be machined but it is pretty easy to do i believe.

Could I not use the one of the mini/metro engine?

Caps and block are matched.

So you'd just need to get them machined as a pair to the right i.d. for the mini crank.

Near Paris - France

Inlet :

Why would they bother turning it this way if it wasn't somehow better (torque curve due to length, better distribution) ?

I would happily test it on a N/A engine if I had the chance to get hold of one

no it is the right size. its the back part of the cap that is different because of the flywheel being there and the way it attaches to the gearbox. I will try and find a pic.

North Yorkshire

3 or 4 years ago brand new Maestro A series engines were available for £100, with ancillaries, and they weren't selling. £180 sounds very ambitious.

I was just using that engine as an example as it had a descent picture. I wouldn't really want to spend more than £50 on an engine/car as an experiment.

I think I understand. Too much metal in the way of the flywheel/transfer gears, so it need to be machined back to allow fitting. I had the other end of the negine in my head...
