Howdy,

I've done a search and despite lots of "Roll Cage" posts, none seem to answer this. It's more of a poll I guess...

Just got the Mini back from Mini Mine, new inner sills, outer sills and door steps, both sides. And a paint job. The cage needs to go back in now and though I'm happy to bolt through to the rear arches (with a spreader plate), I'm now a bit reluctant to drill holes in the Mini's 3rd set of sills.

Though I'm happy to weld it in (i.e. it'll not come out again) am I at risk of destroying the paint job? Bear in mind internally it'll be covered by carpet, or some black Hammerite. What I don't want is for the heat to affect the exterior work, even though the heat would have to conduct right through the inner sill up to the door step to cause any bother.

Also, given a 'cage foot of about 50x150mm (I think) how big a foot is reguired? 70x170mm, 80x180mm? 3mm thk?

Thoughts and opinions appreciated, cheers,

Dave.

if you get a good weld the paint WILL bubble and flake off, id drill and bolt if its already painted, using spreader plates but paint the holes as you do up the bolts to try protect the new metal....

actually no... if the cage is not coming out again i would weld, paint can be put back on easy, rust is a little harder to take of :(

Yes i moved to the darkside *happy*

What cage have you got?

Safety Devices say you shouldn't weld in cage designed to be bolted in and vice versa.

Ah - that pretty much settles it then thanks Alex, it's a Safety Devices bolt in.

Cheers.

the safety devices bolt in cages reqs a plate welded into the floor prior to bolting it in anyway.

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.
