Force Racing ICT Dept Manager Miglia Turbo Am frum Yokshyer tha noes!

Recently ive been having a bit of think about boost control, has anyone tried controlling boost in relation to what gear youre in?

Atm my boost is set at 5.5psi and in 1st i get slight wheel spin toward 3-4000 rpm and the rest of the gears it pulls fairly well but not enough to light up the wheels. However when i had my little boost "incident" the wheel spin was horrendous. So i was thinking of controlling boost via the gears. Perhaps with some micro switches positioned in the gear lever housing? So 1st gear 6psi 2nd gear 9psi 3rd 11psi 4th gear 14psi??

What are peoples thoughts on this??

i do it with an apexi AVCR. but a small array of solenoids and microswitches will achieve the same :) go for it, helps driveability no end!

its more complicated aye, but needs the car to have the appropriate wiring to work, and its expensive, seriously a couple of solenoids and microswitches and perhaps an override -full-boost-in-al-gears hooligan switch will do just fine :)

The tricky part is the solenoids getting them to change the boost correctly.

IMO, mapping boost with TPS would also be a good idea.

It would be a great help that if you held 50% throttle....you got half the boost.

Once the turbo is spooling....normally 50% or 100% doesnt makem a huge difference....its boost everywhere lol

i just use a switch or two for different stages of boost

Do boost solenoids just open and close? Or can they vary the amount of pressure going through them??

they just open and close (unless you drive them with a PWM signal) so to regulate the bleeding you need a valve, any pneumatic valve will do, even those wee plastic clear aquarium valves or any cheap bleed valve :)

I have a greddy profec 2 boost controller, and it will alter the cycle of the solenoid to adjust boost, the way I have it installed it will provide 3 levels of boost. the - for the controller is switched from the MJ so I can power it up at an rpm I choose, eg to avoid high boost in first gear but also I have a switch to disarm it manually which only allows actuator preset boost when off. I then have the option of high and low boost when the controller is on Giving me 3 stages when driving. I believe with time fettling and setting up will provide power and drivabilty for different occaisions. The intention is to run 6 pound on actuator, 10 pound low boost preset, 15pound high boost preset.
Cheers

It uses wheel speed sensors, and calculates it from RPM

ah, clever!

what i was thinking could be a workable soulution is to have a micro switch on the left of the gearshift that is opperated in 1st and 2nd, and just have a lowerboost for those two.

Wheel speed sensors is the way to do this a friend of mine has used a second Mega jolt computer and Edis to make a cheep DIY boost controller.

Basically he fitted a small 36-1 trigger wheel to his drive shaft. then used the programmable outputs of mega jolt to trigger different solenoids, I’m sure a circuit could be easily be made to do this but he pay 80 quid for mega jolt 20 quit of e bay for the solenoids and got the edis from a scrappy.

that means a mappable boost controller for 100 quid no bad in my mind.

Am I right in thinking Will and Ben use something similar on the tt using a reverse light switch to limit boost in first gear?

Jim, have you got any pics of how you've mounted your wheel speed sensors?

I'm using the 'D' lugs which the disk bolts ot the hub with, there are only 4 of them so not the finest resolution but good enough for what I want.

You can just about make out the lugs on this picture
