Do I try and remove the blackening on the tail fo the crank before fitting the primary gear?

The blackening is from some for of heat treatment, its not like the heat treatment on the MED cank I just managed to destroy, that was a greyish colour, this one is BLACK.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

My MED crank was black, it didn't seem to affect how the primary gear fitted and when I lapped my flywheel on it come off the taper pretty quickly so seems quite thin. I left it on but don't know if that was right to do?
