Ive just had an interesting conversation with a guy from MSAR safety about tyres, particularly yoko's. He was telling me that its best to dry them out for a few weeks before fitting due to them having excessive amounts of moisture inside them.

He told me he was having problems after a while on the track as the tyre pressure would increase with the heat. After he started drying them out before fitting they held a more stable pressure. He recons some of the tyres can hold up to 250g of water...*surprised*

Ive never heard of this before, but has anyone tried this at all?

unless you are filling your tyres with nitrogen I don't see how you can keep the water out of them.

Surely they a dry when you fitted them. E.g. not on the rim in the first place.? Also as long as they have been dry stored.

If running as tubeless surly the only water that can get in them is from inflation. So purge your compressor first.

From what he was saying, it sounded like the water soaks into the inner lining from when the are air freighted over? And most trye places ive seen aren't exactly warm and dry places! *hehe!*

He said he weighed them before and after drying them and said there was a significant difference in weight?

I would try this out, but im in too much of a rush to get the car back on the road!

leeds/wakefield.

it sounds like bollocks to me, no pun intended, 250 gms of h2o held in the walls of a rubber tyre, it'll take some convincing me thats true,

Hmm, I'll have some old tyres knocking about after my new ones are fitted. I might leave them outside for a few days when its moist and weigh them, then 'dry them out' and see what the difference is? *oh well*

Thinking about it, 250g is the same as 250 ml...sounds like quite alot, well for a 10" tyre.

Me too.

If you left a sponge the size of a tyre on the shelf at Kwik-fit, how long before it's absorbed 250g of water?

And that's designed to hold water!

On a more serious note....

Has anyone noticed how modern tyres tend to crack a lot ?

Ive seen loads recently, from cheap brands, to the likes of Bridgestone that have cracks between the tread, on the edges of the tread, and even the sidewalls.

As if they had been lying about for years....but havent

After the post by someone on here about tyre dates, i always check the ones we fit at work.

I have never had one over 2 years old yet.

Its most likely down to the Quality of the rubber IMO.
