Ofcourse you could...

2 question though?

1...Would you gain any more power over lets say a 1293?

2...How long would it last for the money(S rods, offset reground crank, big low comp pistons etc)

Remember those 80's F1 cars had 1100ishbhp from only 1500cc.

If it was a good idea, a lot more people would have done it.

Ideal candidate for a Bini Blower at about 6Psi, I would have thought.

Bugger off, I'm getting there.

well a mates 1380 cc is running 12 psi and 160 bhp on the same rollers as i use, I'm no where near that power with that boost on my 1293, so there is some thing in big ccs. but yes i guess things would be under more pressure!

I once almost bought a Weslake 8port head that had been used with a 86mm crankshaft and turbo. It sported injectionsystem from an Omega,(edit, Carlton in the UK?? ) and was said to run very close to 200bhp. As we all know that bhp figures are crap, this shouldn't be taken too seriously, but nevertheless this was a ???????? engine.

I'm just grinding through some very good forced induction books and it seems that long strokes give massive torque increases. Probably would be worth it for someone.

I thought everyone sticking to +20 had some serious reasoning behind it, or is that just for "A" blocks?

Bugger off, I'm getting there.

With the long stroke yes you can potentially make more torque but, your potential Max RPM will be decreased obviously.

And with a turbo bolted onto the back of an engine it gives you MUCH more torque than a standard engine, so do you really need the extra stroke? When a higher red line would be much more useful? *oh well*

I suppose you could make it pull a taller FD. I was thinking more of where an engine is limited by supercharger speed. I had an offer of a cheap 1071 crank and was going to make a blown screamer, looking at the amount it sods the torque up, it seemed like a waste of time, despite the increased rev potential. I suppose going longer stroke is like going in the other direction.

I suppose you could view it as an expensive way of producing more tyre smoke.

Bugger off, I'm getting there.

Forgotten more than most ever know

1380 with turbo makes a lot of torque low down. The common "wisdom" is that one gets into constant block distortion vs. blown head gaskets with high boost and that big a bore.

Well, don?t know about the block distortion, (since it is hard to actually measure...) but the engine does not smoke under load and head gasket is yet to fail. I know that silly boost levels are out of the question, have only used 16 psi. Apart from the little "accident" where the needle went past 22 psi in no time.

As for 1480, forget it. At least for turbo use. It is very hard to get the CR down to sensible level, it is hard with 1380 and the extra 100 cc will make it very difficult. I don?t see any point in spending a load of cash and then running something like std boost because it won?t take more.

Forgot to add one thing: the old "everyone used to have Cooper S" syndrome seems to spread. I have seen a lot of Cooper S engines that originated from an Austin 1300, from Mini 1000 or even 850. None of these engines were NOT 1275 S engines.

Seems that almost every engine for sale nowadays is a special overbore. At least 1380, even bigger. If you plan to actually buy one of these "big" engines I strongly recommend that you remove the head and measure the bore and stroke. If the seller refuses, get a written contract that you can return the engine if it is something else.

I remember a local 1596 cc engine that was pulling to 9000 rpm and had loads of power. It sported a single sid-draught 40 carb and idled beautifully. When the car was sold as is the engine "blew up" before the sale was completed and a normal overbored engine was fitted. Moral of the story: bullshitting is great when you have an audience that does not know a 850 from a prewar side valve engine.

Erm, looking at that engine, i'd say ancient rusty bog standard metro turbo mk1? probably shagged and done 65000 miles or so.
That turbo box is a joke. Did they beat it out with a stone axe? Or someone's head?
