Wifey wants to buy a Motorhome based on a Renault Master 2.5 dCi van chassis.

I know nothing about Renault, except that they are French.

Anyone have any good or bad experiences with these vans?

we used to use kangoo's at work and i liked them, strong and reliable. We have since been invaded by vauxhall though for all of our cars and vans :(

a mate of mine has them for all his fleet vehicles. I think the only issue i've heard of is a problem with injectore welding themselves to the head or something but I think this is with higher mileage units with the abuse that noly a builder can give

I've not been able to find out much negative stuff about them to be honest.

The Fiats get a bad press in the Motorhome world, but that is probably due to the high numbers rather than major problems.

I love my 2.4 RWD Transit but at 22mpg it's a bit thirsty.

We have them at work plant/agricultural fitters with a full workshop in the back. 5 speed boxes used to go at about 60000. 6 speed seem to be better. Like has been said above make sure it idles alrite after a run as it may be a injector fault and they get stuck in the head. We sold the last van that was doing that. Back discs are known for wearing, but they do get some stick when the van weighs 3 tonne! are a good truck though ours get abused and never really had any problems with them

Apparently avoid any Auto Cruise vans pre 2007 as they went bust around this time and all spares for the van inside were sold off. One of our dealers has various motorhome franchises and told me that basically if you have a cupboard hinge go or similar that is tough regardless if it is under the 3 yr warranty or not!

This is a 2008 Knaus.

Knaus went under last year and all factory warranties are void. However, they have been bought out and are back in production. Just need some reassurance that the dealer will provide some sort of warranty.

I'm reasonably relaxed about the Renault Master, other than some of the issues identified above. A hard test drive should identify any problems.

my missus works in the motorhome spares game.. she says:

"there are 2 main web sites, motorhomefacts.com (equivilent to The Mini Forum, full of twats but does have some knowlege on there) and www.motorhomefun.co.uk (they are the turbomini equiv)... Have a look on there for honest reviews etc.
She recommends going for a AutoCruise even tho they went bump (and took her company for £11k), well built design. Parts are a little more difficult to get hold of but everything is still available.
Get a Van Conversion over a coach built, as there could be possible legal issues with coach built ones in the future (many are overweight) as well as coach build seem to suffer more with leaks.
If buying new or nearly new recommend visit to IH Campers in Yorkshire."

Hope this helps.. She is a bit of a MotorHome nerd...

gearboxes are an issue, changed a few and always a real pain to get ahold of second hand (as there sought after) if the origional cant be repaired. yet to see one last over 100k but most of these vans are driven by unsympathetic oiks :)

turbo 16v k-series 11.9@118.9 :)

Thanks.

The wife has a very specific short list of candidates that meet her requirements. Fixed beds and a separate shower preclude the van conversions.

Interesting point about the coachbuilts being overweight. I'm sure my current van weighs more than 3.5 tonne, particularly on the way home from France with 200 bottles of wine.

I don't think I'm going to get much work done on the Minis this weekend as we are going to do a few hundred miles touring dealers *frown*

she also says:
"
Be careful of discover leisure dealers as they are on their way to going bump, so warranty's are null and void once they're gone.
Also, on older coachbuilt Autocruise models they fitted air suspension with TUV approval allowing upgraded GVW over 3.5 tonne, also handles a LOT better with air suspension.

Don't be put off by Autocruise pre 2007, most spares were sold locally around the yorkshire area, and the majority of which were sold to Oleary Motorhomes. A lot are put of by them meaning you could get a bargain motorhome that with a very high spec. Their iveco models are worth looking at, high payload great layout. Most spares are easily available, you just need to know who to ask. "
