Hi, im having difficulty installing the keyway to the end of the crank. The keyway does not fully insert. Picture below:

Can anyone tell me whether this is normal, or whether it should be fully engaged into the end of the crank taper?

Thanks.

The key should sit all the way home with the minimul amount of assistance required. Its hard to see whats going on from that photo.

I take it the clutch assy key is not 180 degrees out?

Im struggling to get a good picture, but see pic below:

The red line is the crank taper, and the blue line is the keyway. I have slid the flywheel as far back as I can, but it obviously is no where near far enough. Why would this be any ideas???

Thanks.

EDIT - the keyway sits right back against the flywheel, so no problem there, but only partially engages the crankshaft.

looks correct to me. You don't want the keyway to bottom out on the crank, as that would make it impossible to push the flywheel any further in on it when torqueing it up

So long as the flywheel is sitting firm on the taper end of the crank (without the key washer) and the flywheel washer face is protruding beyond the crank end face, all should be well.

The key washer should sit hard on the flywheel bit but not touch the crank - so when you tighten the bolt it is pushing the key washer against the flywheel only (to push the flywheel onto the crank).

Then, as miniminor63 says, if it bottoms out on the crank, it won't be pushing the flywheel into position.

Very hard to put into words, but it should be hard on the flywheel but clearance on the crank.....

ahh.. I understand.

Just a thought - How can I tell whether the keyway has bottomed out on the crank when im tightening it?

Simplest way is to do the big bolt up fully - to seat the flywheel properly - then take it out again and look at the gaps in the key washer.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with undoing the big bolt - or even taking the key washer back out again - as the bolt should have done it's job and seated the flywheel, so you should now need a puller to get the flywheel off again..... the bolt does not hold the flywheel one, the taper does..... If the flywheel is still loose, something else is wrong !!!!

Once you are sure the flywheel is seated solidly and the gaps around the washer key are correct, just re-torque the bolt.
