i've been looking at them aswell mate.

the thing that worries me is the fact they don't mention what gearset it is and don't mention if any bearings or the layshaft have been replaced.

the price just seems too good to be true if its all new everything.

Let me know if you get any info off them or anything as i'm just waiting on a mate to get back to me with a price for building me another new one.

from reading the description I'd say they have simply put a staightcut gearset in a used box

There's no way they can do a proper rebuild & be making any money selling it at that price.

I would be happy to go over there Saturday and asses these gearboxes, if there is a need :)

EDIT EDIT EDIT, No I wont. This company is Metro and Mini Spares in Birmingham, NOT Mini and Metro Spares in Warrington!!!

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

If it is who I think it is, they are a quite well established place in Birmingham that have been operating for many years, quite involved in autograss racing I believe.

right spoke to them today at mini and metro spares.
the boxes have new trans-x gear set, with a secondhand (good) layshaft. for the price shown in the ad, the box is stripped, cleaned, sc gears fitted along with secondhand (good) bearings.

the chap said he would fit new bearings for just the cost of them, which he said was £50
also they do offer a guaranty on the standard boxes they do, and could also pass this over to the sc boxes if they have not been abused! ( their words) so if your racing, i dont think this will apply.

so for a box with new bearings your looking at £475

only thing worries me is the layshaft.

any thoughts??

Sounds alright to me if you want a budget SC box and arent going to be putting monster power through it.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

How much is a new lay shaft? Even if you purchased one and fitted itof fitted a good second hand one of yoour own. If the shaft has lost no material from ware or foreign object damage it would be ok to re-fit if you have the facility to crack test it as well all the better.

Own the day

Agreed ! I fitted a decent second hand one last time I rebuild my gearbox, because the new one was shit.

i've decided to stick with a brand new box personally, it's costing just shy of a grand but i know it'll be good for another 30,000 miles like the last one Dave built me, and it'll take 200 lb/ft without shitting itself.

thats new everything, 4pin diff (for now), all transfer case done aswell, peace of mind.
