Right chaps, ign timing is something of a grey area with me
i know what it is but ive never know hpw configure properly and whats dangerous and whats not?

I understans that if you put loads of advance on idle thw engine will run cooler? Why?

Also loads of advance when on boost is bad? Why?

Any advise i great

Too much advance on boost equals detonation, as the spark plug tries to ignite the mixture too soon. Detonation will seriously damage your pistons/rings.

(Far) Too little advance on idle will mean the mixture is burning into the exhaust which will make everything hot.

Just to visualise what dave has said. Petrol vapour burns at 15ft per second, so knowing this you can see why advancing the ignition as rpm increases is required. You have to give the flame a head start in order for it to keep up with the faster moving piston.

Hope that helps.

Ahh some good advice here, i kind of had an idea what was going on but was never sure. So at what point on the MJ Table would you call Idle?
