Im currently rebuilding an 1987, 65k turbo engine

Whats the best way to remove the deposits of coke(carbon or whatever it is) off the valves. Can i just use emery paper/cloth or is there a magic chemical is can use which will disolve this crud?

Thanks

Yes, Im getting there.....

what i use and have done so for many years is put the valves in a elec hand drill spin them up, then use somp P40 grit paper to take the worst off, then use p 80 grit, then say p180 working my way down the papers i find this enough, but if you wish you can use say 320 wet dry to give a nice polish to finish with.
only go up the shank of the valve about 10mm max you dont want to score the stem. also be carefull of the valve seat dont go over the top there.

have fun

its a good idea to wrap the valve stem in electrical tape or somthing so that the drill chuck cant damage the stem.

Remember to have the valves recut EVERY time they are out of the head. It's silly not to, as they wear sufficient not to seal after 10000miles.

Vegard: i have never come across the actual valves been cut ?
i usually ditch these if the seats are totally knackard and fitt new ones, did you mean the valve seats on the head? my friend.
