Hey all

Some of you may recall a bit ago I had my house broken into and my trusty laptop nicked.

The insurance company have offered me a new one, can anyone who knows about PC specs look at it and comment for me as the numbers really don't mean a lot to me.

I used my old laptop for nothing especially taxing, mainly office type applications, and also some AutoCAD work, not really into computer games at all and any I do play would be on a playstation not a pc.

Spec as follows-

Intel Celeron 2.8GHz
40Gb Hard Drive
256MB RAM
15" TFT screen
DVD/CD combo drive
Windows XP Pro

I think it is probably more than enough for what I want, having said that never used Windows XP before so any comments on that as well??

Cheers all.

PS Will be at Mallory this sunday on a track day if anyone is down that way and wants to see a 205 hurtling round a track.......

PPS See told you it was completely O/T!!!!!

its a fairly low spec for a new pc... but will more than likly do what you want!

XP is good...

All depends on the price, the best thing to do is spec up the same pc on www.dell.co.uk see how it compairs!

I dont really like celeron's, but that's just personal opinion. I'm sure that'd be fine for the stuff you need to do :)

thats the thing, if your old laptop was a few years old, even a low spec machine will wipe the floor with your old one.

Yeah, my old one was about at the same time as gods dog, so a modern one should piss on it like you say!

Yeah I had already had that thought, tried to get some more out of them but they were not being too cooperative, but had a look and I can get an extra 512 for ?65 from crucial.co.uk to top it up to 768 and that should be plenty.

The processor being a celeron is a cheap low quality one (needs to be a Pentium 4 these days) 40GB is not a very large HD even for a laptop and most decent laptops have DVD rewriters as std these days.

2.8 is fine...

40 gb will do for now

and dvd rewriter? Not in most lappys.

But how much power does #Tom need? Not much, so if the price is good....

Well the price was fantastic......?50 excess to my insurance company and voila I have a new laptop........it turned up this morning.

To be honest I am not at all bothered about a dvd rewriter, have no use for one. Also comparing to what I had before (P2 350, 4Gb HDD and 64Mb) I am more than happy with it, and a cd-writer drive is cutting edge modern technology as far as pc's in my house go!

Also all I really do on my laptop is office type applications, a bit of CAD, and occasionally some ECU mapping, so plenty good for me.

Cheers for advice chaps.

head down to pc-world, find whaever spec they are offering for about 999->1200 squid and quote them that? I'm guessing that they have a"generic Laptop" price, and then specials added on after that for things like G5's.
Might be worth a try?
