Now i have a fair amount of soldering practice, used to do electronics at GCSE, making phot etched boards etc but all the stuff i have ever done was "through" mounted.

I'v built two V4 kits, it's really not that hard. It helps if there are two of you, but i built the second one on my own, it just took a little more time as i had to hold tweezers and the solder in one hand and the iron in the other. Edited by Carl S on 1st Jul, 2009. |

The Megasquirt is easy as it is all through mounted.

I've built dozens but not the V4 - I havent got the time to build them, they look far more time consuming.

I deal with this stuff all day long, my top tip is to put a small bit of solder on one PCB pad of every component before you start. That way you can solder the component on one end at a time. For stuff like ICs solder one leg down then do the opposite corner to hold it steady then take your time soldering the rest up.
