just been a program on discovery about these, apparently they made 100,000 and they were the business against the japs in burma, they called these "universal carriers" as they didnt have a bren on, but were the same vehicle by the looks of it?

yes Universal carrier (mine being Mk1 no.1) nick named the bren gun carrier by the brits due to it carrying the .303 Bren gun

enjoy:-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g56HSVZlZ-0

only thing is they get the manufacturer incorrect. thorneycroft produced carriers for ford (but designed by Vickers Armstrongs...previously Carden Lloyd) along with others like Wollesley....

british models were not 85bhp they were alot less, the canadian carriers ala mine were 85 and 94 bhp with the larger spark plugs and 24 headstuds..... canadian armour was thicker too.

oh yes for sure it will have the two bren guns and a boys AT rifle i want the thing to be as accurate as possible even down to what the crew wear. The more it has as per 1942 issue the more it is worth plus it gives me better appreciation for what my grandad experienced (all be it i am not landing on green beach at salerno 1943 facing a heavily armed and motivated panzer unit ! I cant begin to comprehend the fear the lads must have felt i have seen footage of the assault and the germans were firing flak down the cliffs at the lads

well its crunch time, do i keep the remains of the center bulkhead (plate behind the driver and in front of the engine) or do i chop out and put a whole new peice in, my thoughts are torn as i should really try and keep as much of the original tank in place but i fear it will look shite if patched up

your thoughts peeps ?

Keep the bulkhead. Some well dressed welds should be almost indistinguishable from the original panel.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

get that thing blasted. Then you will get a nice clean starting point, and you will see what will have to be replaced and not

its going to get blasted, all the remaining steel is ok ie no major rot. was thinking if replacing the bits of missing steel would it not be better to weld it then blast it, would the blasting hide the welds better ?

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

i would blast then weld for sure. better for doing repairs neater on blasted steel, even if its primed afterwards.

I've done some sheet metal the other week and after linishing with a flap disc on the grinder, it looks like it was one piece. Even easier on that thick stuff, just "V" it nicely and weld it in. after paint there is no way anyone would know you had fitted a new piece.

I would also leave the steel you planning to fit outside for a while to let it pit slightly, it will blend in a lot better with the original then.

yes matey made myself a forge two days ago for a staggering 42p waiting on my 3/8th solid rivets coming up from Birmingham picking up my front armor plate tomorrow..... got a quote to sand blast the hull and it was 400+vat so no ta very much ! going to sand it with grinder and knotted mandrel.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhXRt7Psx34

brake drum forge !! the coals were just to test the air flow... no messing on with pipes just two hubs bolted back to back the lower acting as a plenum chamber *wink* ah thank you very much TM !! my funds have all gone into keeping my mum in her home she has zero money and was defaulting on her mortgage so yet another mini went the journey along with a shitload of my toolage.

here is some footage of me mates carrier.... went down to get measurements from his armor and ended up going for a drive around his farm...

http://www.youtube.com/user/madaboutbrens#...u/2/GKDSbl-Adn0

the reason we were going real slow on the closeup is because we had just come through a narrow gate. the glacis plate has been removed,,,, normally your legs would be covered up.

Well i have stripped and rebuilt the brake assemblies which were shall we say mega seized ! when i managed to finally get the drums off they looked like this

other than the pads being good the internals were a bit caput.....

i pulled them apart and moseyed back to the clean workshop...... aka Kitchen..... and began the strip down (of the components that is)
carefully teasing the expander unit to bits i managed to free up the stuck pistons without damaging the castings, luckily for me my fingers are small so could get them right into the housing, once stripped down i initially washed them with cellulose thinners then popped them into the sink and sprayed them down with oven cleaner and left for a while. returned and rinsed off to have nice clean and dry bits to work with.

next i attacked the cast housing (the outside) with 80 grit pads rubbing away all of the oxidised materials and loose paint, finishing it off with a 350 grit pad to make it smooth (but keyed), i used some 1200 grit wet and dry on the chambers and removed the pitting. then placed the housing into the oven to gently heat through. once warm or slightly hot to the touch i added a coat of spray, resulting in a quick drying nice satin coat finish.

finally after pollishing and cleaning the internals i added some grease and rebuilt the expander unit like so.

i noticed the retaining pins were missing... rotted away perhaps or removed for greater travel, none the less UC-F1 1942 workshop manual says they should be there so i replaced them.

i wire brushed and red oxided the back plate and metal sections of the shoes so they were nice and clean then rebuilt the assembly

i have replaced the old ruined leather gaiter with a rubber equivalent... i used a 1970 vauxhall viva one cut down and it looks a good finish, plus it wont let any water in so happy days :)

I am going to take a gamble and not rebuild the diff, i have justified this by looking at the oil condition that came out and the fact when spun it is perfectly smooth and everything works...........remember this post if in future i blow out a diff har har har !

strangely i have anjoyed rebuilding the brakes, normally it is the most painfull and mundane task on a vehicle, but in comparisson to my other tasks this one has been nice and straight from the book *happy*

i have also stripped and rebuilt the drivers side bell crank that mounts onto the rear pannel so that is working great, this connects the pushrod from the steering wheel to the expander unit on the drum........ just got to do the gunners side and the axle can go back on. Unfortunately the grease nipple is missing from the drivers side one so i will have to go on the hunt.

just thought some of you may be interested in its rebirth........

have got most the front armour back on now so she is coming along nicely

i could not get my head around using a mechanical sytem over a hydraulic one just seems nuts.... i suppose as i have proved you can strip and re grease a mech unit in the field no probs, and no bleeding issues, just bolt it back on.

Jersey, CI

Great Project, Superb. Over here in Jersey there's sh*t loads of bunkers, tunnels & gun emplacements from when the Germans were here in the war - there's an unfinished tunnel with an old Citroen van that was reversed in just after the war and left to rot ever since, proper awesome to see.
My old man was a kid during the occupation and i often get stories about what it was like back then and how hard life really was.
I know it's not really relevant to this but i'm very interested in all things WW2 - great project & history - Look forward to lots more pictures *smiley*
