Are these the same thing? And if so, can't a just get a bov from a different company, and use it instead of the usual dump valve that everyone uses?

yep same thing, you can just get a generic one of ebay.

The piston ones are ok if they have the viton seal, you clean them out every now and again or mount them facing downwards. |

I was thinking more one from turbonetics or greddy, a little more expensive, but i think it would do the job well.
