Hey all,
im a newbie and im gunna ask the question that you hate to hear BUT its got a bit of a twist. Now ive been through a lot of the site (because i read in the first post that i saw that your all sick of the how to do a conversion question) and ive got a couple of extra queries i hope you can help me with. I have currently got a 1973 aussie spec clubman (coz im in australia) but after the 1098 died, i imported a non-turbo 1275 metro lump from the uk and stuck it into my lil car along with disk brakes. Now seeing as my engine is already a metro, does that mean if i bought a metro turbo setup (manifolds turbo plenum etc) Would bolt striaght onto my engine?? As it is only a standard metro im aware that it might some mods to maybe the pistons or atleast the head before turboing it. What is exactly needed?? I dont plan on running high amounts of boost, just enough for a little extra kick, i read somewhere that 4 psi was the standard for the metro turbo and that would be plenty for what i want to do. Also seeing as it is a clubman does it still need a box installed into the bulk head or is there more room in a clubbie as apposed to a roundie??
As im in australia i want to know all the bits i need so i can get them all at once to save on shipping costs

thanks and sorry for asking again

someone will correct me if im wrong, but i BELIEVE you can run up to the standard 7PSI on a standard (non MG) 1275.

however an intercooler is a g ood idea.

if you rin aus, importing a heavy turbo and cas irn manifold is guna be a bit of a pig? what about geting a local engineeringy place to make you amanifold for a T2!? modern turbo, less lag, and seing as ur in aus, probably cheaper!

turbo 16v k-series 11.9@118.9 :)

really up to 7psi, thats great news. The reason i was going to import it was i have a friend over in the uk who is coming back for xmas and i was going to get them to bring it back for me on the plane. I had a guy weigh the turbo and manifolds and stuff and it came to 18kgs which is within the 20 kgs of luggage my friend can bring back with her, thanks for the info

7psi is optomistic IMHO

Rover had the boost set to 4pi due to reliability problems with the gearbox

You would do better to rebuild the engine and box to whatever spec you require as it may end in tears

The engines are practically similar apart from the pistons. Those are the ONLY issue you need to consider without going stupid on boost levels. The original A+ pistons are of very good quality as a matter of fact.

Is this the 12HD24 engine that we're talking about? I'm thinking of doing exactly the same thing as I'm gonna rebuild my 12Hd24 1275 engine anyway cos it's seen much better days, so replacing pistons and uprating a few bits and bobs isn't really too much hassle.

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

nah 7 psi driven sensibly is fine. lots of wheel spins and messing about later and you will knacker the diff pin as wolfie says *smiley*

This is much better news than i thought, so from what you are saying i can buy something like this
[href]http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=72205&item=7933895792&rd=1[/href]
and i can bolt it straight onto my standard metro whith no other mods needed except for a bulkhead box??

thanks guys

you would also need a turbo fuel pump and a fuel regulator from a metro turbo too, so add those to your list if you can't get them over in australia.

I wouldn't say that 7psi is fine...

What octane fuel are you intending to use? Let's not forget the standard CR of the metro 1275 (except special low-compression derivatives) was 9.75:1 - slightly higher than the metro turbo...
You'll need to retard your ignition slightly, or limit your advance by modding your base-plate.
Everything is do-able, and If you're happy to bolt the bits on, then start at 4psi, and get it to a RR to see what it'll take...
A much better option is to lift the head, giving it a de-coke and freshen up at the same time, then open the chambers out - maybe get the short-side radius off the ports aswell? That way, you'll run 7psi (or more) without resorting to lots of retard to supress the detonation.

Personally, I'd get the lot on your engine, and get happy with it (at 4psi) then do the mods to run more boost...
