Noticed recently that the oil pressure on our mpi mini is slow to build when starting from cold. It's 2, maybe 3 seconds before the light goes out and the noticable engine clatter stops. It has (clean) 20/50 oil in it and a champion oil filter.

Any idea why it would do this?

Thanks

Don't condem the engine without first checking that the plunger in the relief valve is not stuck.

Not intergalactic mileage but plenty to be caused by the things Alex mentions above.

Either put up with it or strip it for inspection in my opinion.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Change the oil switch, only a few quid. Or fit an oil pressure gauge.

Change the oil filter for a pukka MG Rover or Unipart job. Im not convinced the Champion ones are any good and even more convinced the Halords ones are the worst of the lot. The filter has an anti drain down valve, if there is crap stuck in it, or its leaking, the filter will drain down which can take a good few seconds to prime again.

Cheap options before you pull the engine. Change the filter for an MG rover one, change the oil switch for a new one, and check the oil pressure valve as discused earlier. If its still the same, fit an oil gauge and check the idle oil pressure when oil temp is around 80c. Pressure should be at least 15 psi, less and the engine is close to a rebuild.

Note, oil filter is the same for the K series engine, MG Rover part number LPW100180 or LPW100181, Unipart number GFE405

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be...
So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

My money is on the big ends, being a bit worn, you may have had oil starvation at somepoint. But exhaust all the easy routes first!

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

my stab is a worn oil pump.

Happened on my dads van the other year to avon. it had been slow to put the oil light off for a while and flickered for the first few seconds.

then about 45mins from avon, it gave up the ghost and a big end shell spat out. one goosed engine! oops!
