I want to build un uprate my turbo engine from scratch, so I'm looking for a good book that I can read so I know what I'm doing. I know that I can find all of the info on this forum, but I want to know exactly why I should a particular type of turbo, what type of cam I should use for what application and why.

Basically I want to know how it all works. So I can build an engine specific to my needs, driving style etc. Are there any good books or resources out there that anybody knows of?

Thanks *happy*

Start off by reading David Vizards book "Modifying the A series Engine"

It is a bible for all things A series, and although has not got a huge amount specifically on turbo engines, there is enough there to get you started and give you a good general understanding.

There are also available various other books on turbo and supercharging which may be worth reading, but I have not got any of these so cannot recommend any.

Corky bell is one I'd recomend also.
Amazon often do deals on the 'forced induction' and performance 4-srtoke tuning' books by Bell - both are excellent.

Forgotten more than most ever know

Corky Bell has a turbo book called "Maximum boost". Good basic stuff of turbocharging in general. It is also quite new. (Note that most turbo books are 20+ years old, and may supply outdated info).

Then there?s a book of VW turbos called "turbomania" that covers air cooled flat fours with Dellorto carburation. Not that much use for Mini owners.

Corky Bell's Maximum Boost is very poor IMO.

Its not new and its mostly over simplified!

That is a MUCH better book!!

In what way is it poor???

I've found it a very good all round book, that goes into as much detail as is needed for an insight into the theory and practice of turbocharging.... You want more info, you'll continue your reading elsewhere like the Bosch books - but try reading those before you know what a compressor map or compression ratio is and you'll not get very far...

for example the methods of boost control...

or the suggested boost vs CR or boost vs octane.

The examples are a bit vauige as well... where as the other book is much more modern and recognises things such as wide band lambda sensors.

I have a massive library of crappy old books and Vizard is my No1 read. Followed by "Automotive Supercharging and Turbocharging" By Haynes (F880) it's a brilliant book and gives a modern look at all the detail, including performance maps and a lot of the maths.

From my perspective, I go with the "learn as much as you can about engine design, so that you can select the right components".

Buying the components is another matter *wink*

Bugger off, I'm getting there.
