Seems like I'm having a problem a day leading up to Avon.

Tuesday the datalogging packed up.

Yesterday, I broke down because of melted cables.

Today when I turn off the ignition, the engine carries on running *oh well*

The power to the Megasquirt and coil pack is taken of a relay powered by the ignition live fuse in the usual 4-fuse block.

Oil light and ignition light come on when I switch on the ignition. Start engine, runs, turn off ignition, engine carries on, ignition light comes on.

Any ideas?

Alternator back feeding the coil somehow meaning it does not lose power?

Just changed the MS main relay and still happens.

Reckon it might be the main mini ignition relay.

Is it the yellow one in this picture?

The ignition light comes on that sounds telling you the charging circuit has failed which means there is little or no output.

THis lends me to the following question, is the feed to the megasquirt swithched +Ve permanent live or +Ve switched ignition live? Basicaly brownwire to relay or white wire to relay?

Yank it and see if it cut the motor!

It's on the switched live.

Now it's intermittent *oh well*

Just have to put it in first with the brakes on and drop the clutch *happy*

Are you sure it's the MS still being powered up or perhaps "normal" runon (hotspots etc.)

Plug the laptop in and you'll soon see if the MS is powered (ie, it will still show as synched or whatever the equivilant indicator is in TunerStudio).

Is it possible you have melted some of the wires to/from the relay?? you had heat problems in that area the other day.

Yank the relays and see what happens then as above if you have isolated the circuit's then you may be looking at run on.

Does anyone here use the anti run on valve?

Turn ignition off, step on brakes and release clutch while in gear.

Engine will stop instantly every time. Handy if you have ever driven a mini with severe coke buildup.

The problem is that the ignition live at the 4-fuse block is not going off when I turn off the ignition.

So it's either the ignition switch of the main relay.

Can someone tell me where the main relay is located.

This is common. The MS is being powered through the ignition light. Put a diode inline and it should be fine.

Thanks everyone.

I think I may have cured it by sorting out the sticking throttle that was causing a high idle.

Interesting that the alternator can back feed enough to hold the MS relay in.

Its why I asked where you were getting the power from. If it were from the white wire (ignition live) side of a mini circuit the second you turn it of at the ignition no matter what the relay does you have killed the source supply. So even if the relay is still latched closed power to the MS has already been interrupted.

The later injection minis have a diode in the excite wire on the alternator to prevent this very thing. without it the engine stays running even with the key out of the barrel and in your hand, it back feeds through the brown yellow wire through the bulb on the dash onto the white wire from the ignition switch.

yip plenty of people on the 16vminiclub suffer this issue when using a modern wiring loom and mini dash :) diode required!

Well I think it has sorted itself for now, but I'll fit a diode anyway.

Good job it is sorted as I had a brown trouser moment last night.

Intercooler must have moved under boost in first as I accelerated at a moderate pace up to 30 in first in the middle of the village.

As I changed into second, the revs hit the limiter and the next thing I know it's rocketing away in second under full boost and my foot is nowhere near the pedal *surprised*

Had to turn the ignition key to stop it. Still over shot my drive by a fair distance.

The throttle body was hard against the coil jamming open the throttle.

Hope the neighbours did not see it. My standing in the community will be badly damaged :$

Off to make a bracket for the intercooler.
